I want to buy within the next two weeks? Any suggestions?

Our hospital gave all it's new 'terns T3s - great little devices. Don't have wi-fi... but other than that, no complaints at all. And that screen - wow!

You don't think the Axim is too big/heavy? What about availability of medical software?
And for the T3 users, don't you miss the lack of wi-fi or is it really not that necessary?

Get the Dell. With all the stuff you carry around in your coat pocket, what we all really need to add is a brick. :p

HAHAHA

I'm probably gonna go for the Axim. Get a lot for the price, hospital has WiFi, only downside being that there is a 1 month wait from dell.com for them.

I have a copy of UptoDate for it...how can I not get one? :)

I hear you, but if you put uptodate on it, will you have much room (memory) for anything else?

I have a 256 SD card and a 256 CF card in mine. I've got videos, pics, books, etc. stored on my memory cards. Plenty of memory.

Up to date: takes nearly 800 mb of memory...........a one gig card costs approximately $299.00.

The T3 is ok also. I guess I would flip a coin.

Everyone seems to be going with the Dell. And before I started this thread, I was leaning heavily toward the T3. Now, I'm thoroughly confused.
What about software for the Dell? Is it really hard to find free medical stuff that I would want for it? Would it be better to just get a T3 and a nice laptop?

I hate to hijack the thread to ask another question..........does anyone know what big of a difference it is between the 312 MHz Dell and its double-speed counterpart? For the purpose of our rotations, is the higher model worth the extra Benjamin?

In my former life, prior to medicine, we had a saying: "Speed is life." The same applies here. If you want the best longevity from your equipment, I would think it's worth it.

These things are obviously gonna just get faster and faster. Remember when the computer you bought was top of the line...and now it's panting trying to load up a smily face in your SDN post...?

X30 - 624mHz 64MB WiFi/BT is the top of the market right now. What makes it exceptionally attractive is the price --> 350 bone$.

And I don't want to hear "oooo...but palm has more programs" or "oooo...it's prettier"

Both Windows[ipaq/toshiba/dell] and Palm[Tungsten, suCkLIE] (As well as Linux now - Zaurus) have the same software developed for all platforms, for instance:

Epocrates
Tarascon
Harrisons
Sanford's
and many more

All support multi platforms. And you can exchange (beam/bluetooth) things to each other to your heart's desire.

Wanna compare prices/heat?

Dell X30 - $350
624mHz 64MB WiFi/BlueTooth SDIO

Ipaq 4155 (what I have) - $370-$400
400mHz 32MB Wifi/Bluetooth SDIO

Toshiba e755
400mHz 32MB Wifi SDIO Compact Flash (No BlueTooth)

Tungsten T3 - $400
400mHz 64MB BT SDIO (no WiFi)

Tungsten C - $400
400mHz 64MB WiFi SDIO (no BlueTooth)

Sony CLIE TH55 ($400 - OUTRAGE)
8-123mHz 32MB WiFi Memory Stick (No Bluetooth)

-----
Of course there is some more, but $400 seems the top line today (unless you wanna spend $500 for fancypants stuff) and X30 gives it to you straight for less.

If I was to buy again I would get the Dell.
If I was a wuss I would buy the Tungsten C
If I was dumb I would buy the CLIE (for looks)
If I wanted to waste more time I would write another post on SDN

You need the 1 gig card. I found some going on eBay for $150-ish...

What else am I gonna spend my money on? I'm doing ICU this month!

I've been using an Ipaq & have been really impressed with it. I would definitely buy a windows based Pocket PC next time - mainly for seamless synching with files on my laptop.

Okay, you guys. Thanks for all your advice. I think I'm going to get the Dell Axim X30 624MHz this weekend. I really like the integrated WiFi aspect along with the Bluetooth. I hope I'm happy. Plus it's on sale right now at dell.com.

T3 is far superior.

Superior operating system.
Just as fast in real-time.
More reliable.
Free medical software.
Longer battery life.

Only negative is no internet. But there is never a need to access the internet at the hospital.

Fast as 624 MHz? And I do want to be able to use it outside of the hospital. And I was under the impression that the battery life was about the same for both the Dell and the T3, but I could be wrong.

Real Time, what the crap is that...? 400mHz vs 624mHz? That's a ~30% upgrade "in real time"

More reliable - ya, unless you want to find a file somebody just bluetoothed/IRd and it ended up somewhere in the vast abyss of the Palm OS. you can't search for individual files because...Palm OS is just THAT user friendly.

Free medical software - how about more free software for the PPC than outdated Palms.

No INTERNET? How about you join us in THIS CENTURY. WiFi is the standard (at least right now before UWB comes here from Asia).
And a lot of hospitals right now have WiFi (at least PENN does)

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY

How about PRICE?

T3 - ~$450 vs X30 $314

Dell Axim x30 $314.00
(special till the end of the month)

Who in their right mind would get an outdated, inferior and MORE EXPENSIVE system ?
(unless they didn't know better)

Right on brother!

Or you can wait for the upcoming T4 which will have 802.11 Wi-Fi capabilities...

and 624 MHz too? Believe me, I would wait if I could get it in a palm version. I'd rather have a Palm, but the Dell just seems too hard to pass up.

Is the one month wait for the 624Mhz Axim?
Thanks!

Well, the final specs for the T4 have not been officially released, but it looks like it will be a 600+MHz XScale. To be honest, I'm not a chip geek, so I don't know what all chips Intel has in its Xscale line. However, those who have tested the T4 talk about a serious performance boost from the T3 which has a 400 MHz Xscale in it. Besides, anyone who can tell the difference between 600 and 700 MHz processors accurately counts to the closest hundredths of a second.... Probably doesn't even need a PDA in the first place with that brain...

Real time means -> run the same program on both products and see how fast it takes each one to operate. I did this with a classmate for several programs. There was no difference.

I bought my T3 brand new for $315 about 6 months ago.

Palm software is superior. Hardware is more reliable.

Don't need Wifi at the hospital.

Palm has better and more free medical software. Sorry.

You are obviously ******ed.

Just ordered the 624Mhz Axim X30. While the website says there is a 3+ week wait, my order confirmation said it'll be shipped by this Friday at the latest. Just wanted to let everyone know they won't have to wait a month to receive it. Total cost was about $340 with a leather carrying case. Not bad at all.

First of all, what are you in KINDERGARTEN...(No my dad can kick your dad's ass)? Grow up...if you're gonna say something back that shiznit up, biotch.

BENCHMARKS (X30 blows all other PPC away - T3 doesn't even register):
http://www.bargainpda.com/reviews/default.asp?reviewID=291

and Palm software works fine...if you are a MacIntosh newb. ooooh...look at the colors...soooo pretty!

and THE PRICE?
You're shi&^*% me with your $315 unless you bought it off of some poor sucker on ebay. Office Depot has it for $400 boneZ.
http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=906715

So don't spread the hate just cause you bought a shytty piece of crap and now regret it.

ps. Hospitals without WiFi still use leeches and bloodletting. Get with the program.

I'm willing to bet DireWolf's dashingly quick intellect that the T4 will cost and ARM and a LEG when it comes out. There is no way that Palm can undercut the market like Dell. They're not as huge of a company to sacrifice their initial profits for long term income, but what do I know about Econ.

Obviously you don't know how to shop on the internet. There are classes for this. I found several stores selling the T3 for below $350. Catch a sale and you're looking at $310-$330.

Sorry to hear that you paid more than I did and still received an inferior product. Have fun spending hours talking with Dell customer support.

ps. our hospital has Wifi. But I don't need it to look up gay porn like you do.

What do you have against gay people? Bigotry gettin' the best of you?

FIRST OF ALL I have the 4155, and I don't need support for a simple PPC.

SECOND OF ALL, I'm not talking about REFURB/rebuilt shait (which is what you obviously got), I'm talking about brand new units.
While there are some $370 deals on the BRAND NEW T3, they come from sites like http://www.direwolfshouseofunfunnycommentsandcrap.com with exceptionally snappy customer support (no idea what they're talking about).

Anyway, you're just a student, so I wouldn't expect you to know that Palm is like the Mac or SONY Clie, Shiny but blows.

Enjoy your slow gameboy with pretty colors.

(Whatcha got b?)

Sorry again. Brand new. Factory sealed. Spend the money and take some internet classes.

It amuses me that you cannot find brand new T3's for under $350. I would be in denial too.

What's with you and your INTERNET CLASSES? is that how you learned all your cool computer knowledge, or is that where the other computer geeks came up with your lame SDN screen name?

LIKE I SAID BEFORE
I know it's a hard concept to understand, but these are GRADUATE Medical Education forums. That means scrubs like you should learn the m.o. and if you choose to try to contribute something - back up what you're blabbering about with some E-V-I-D-E-N-C-E.

Ever heard of it? I know it's a new thing, but that's how grown ups do things/practice medicine. That's kinda what this thing called RESIDENCY is aboooot.

You got something to say, boy? Post the link.

Otherwise, shut it. Or are you gonna tell me again that your PDA is "The keenest thing around?"

Out.

ps. $350 T3 is still more than the $315 X30 DELL deal WITH WiFi, so suck it.

(Oh yeah, and MacGyver SUX!)

I can't help it your screename is named after a cheese company. Way to go.

Once again, the all-powerful intern knows everything about everything.

Spare me. I eat half-wits like you for breakfast.

Go to pricegrabber.com

Click on PDA.

Click Tungsten T3, which is ranked #1.

13 sellers for less than $350. Brand new.

Kudos on the "cheese" comment. Must have taken a solid hour of tough thinkin'

I'm sorry that you got made fun of a lot in middle school. Anyway, Pricegrabber.com (since you brought it up) has them down to $330 (brand new - from some sketchy a$$ places)...which by the way

IS STILL MORE MULLAH THAN THE X30, so WTF are you talking about mf-er?!

You say stupid shait like this on rounds to your residents too? I'd make more fun of you if you weren't so challenged.

Can I take some of your HUMOR classes, or be transferred to the INTERNET curriculum?

Lil' bizznatch.

ps.(I wonder how many words like this will get this thread shut down)

I must have gotten like 3 people in my hospital to run out and get the X30.

I swear it on MacGyver's lack of humor.

Just to spite me, eh?

You hate MacGyver worse than me?

I must be doing something wrong.

You know what. Fock it.
I'm dropping out of school and selling T3's. Then we'll see who's #1.

I don't have much experience with the Axims, but I have a Pocket PC now (hp ipaq 5555). I was a previous Palm Vx, m505, m515, and Tungsten T2 user, and I have to say that this Pocket PC is a lot better. There are some things that I prefer on the Palm (the way contacts are sorted and how you can pull up a contact's full screen info, then hit the down key to scroll through them), but overall I like the features of the PPC better.

The cool thing is that I just recently bought a Moto V600 Bluetooth phone. So now I can surf the internet off my PDA through my cell phone's Bluetooth connection. (No, this is NOT exclusive to PPC's. Tungsten's also do this.) I think the PPC has a better web interface (Pocket IE) than the Palm does.

If your goal is internet access, get a Pocket PC. As I stated earlier, I have no intention of using my PDA for surfing the web- that is why I have a computer. If you only need a PDA for medical programs, scheduling, contacts, etc. Palm is far superior.

There you go again Dire...

If we didn't agree about MacGyver sucking, I would have had to spread the love again.

Cheers.

So how did you get it to work? Do you have T-mobile? I have a t610 phone (BT+)...of course I don't subscribe to any additional internet service in my plan, but just wanted to know whether you are getting access through your cell phone provider, or do you simply dial-up (like NetZero or Earthlink or something).

ps. btw how you like them batteries on the HP 5000 series? is it true they let you stay connected for hours or what?
