So who got in on this deal?
I also was able to stack a $50 dell big bucks coupon onto the order :)

I picked up a nicely equipped 600m for $791 + Free shipping + Tax (~$39)

1.8ghz pentium M 400mhz FSB
64mb mobile radeon 9000 graphics
256mb ram
60gb 4200rpm HD
802.11 b/g wireless
8X +/- DVD dual layer burner
14.1" SXGA screen

Only thing i need to do is bump the memory from 256 to 1 stick of 512mb and maybe swap the 4200rpm 60GB drive for a 7200 rpm.

I got an email this morning regarding ridiculous deals on Dell laptops...Wasn't sure if it was a scam or not...is it legit? I'm looking for a new laptop, but was thinking of going IBM...(smaller, lighter)...anyone have a strong opinion one way or another for a person who knows nothing about computers?

Do we have to buy the laptop from school? I assume that they do some special configuration on our laptop (add some softwares and hardware) so we could dial on their network. Just my thought. Need some more clarification. Thanks!

if you PM me your email address, i'll forward you the email i received.

Oh, and some schools require you buy a computer from them (i.e. Buffalo)...others just make recommendations or leave it up to you.

drat ibms are indeed nicer and get GREAT battery life however they are about 1.5 - 2X as much $.

IBM does tend to make a better, more reliable computer. But they look like crap and also, IBM recently sold their computer division to Lenovo in China. They're allowed to continue to use the IBM brand name for 5 years. Not sure if you'll get the same quality or support with the new company.

Yeah, IBM computers look so ugly. I'd never buy one. I like HPs, Dells, Toshiba and Sonys. If you really want a solid machine, it's better to go buy components and put them together yourself. These days building a computer is almost plug and play. Has anyone heard about fanless powersupply? I was hesitant to try out, but indeed, they are nice.

I scored 3 Dell Inspiron 6000 laptops with 1.3 Mobile Celeron in each, 15.4 wide screen, 30gb hard drive, wireless network card, 256ram and dvdrw for $435 shipped each

look under outlet.dell.com as it is full of great deals and don't forget to use F5 for refresh  who knows what you can find...

Why would you wanna swap the HDD to 7200 rpm? :)

If you need speed then by a 3.5 inch drive with 16mb cache and drop it in a firewire external enclosure. Then run your os on the internal drive and your high speed programs from the external drive. It is especially useful if you do a bunch of video rendering. This way is cheaper and more effective, plus you get to keep your existing hard drive. Otherwise, you'll spend a lot on a 7200 2.5inch drive that won't give you that much of a speed increase.

oh man. you boys is silly. i don't care what my computer looks like as long as the screen isn't the size of a cell phone and it doesn't crash on me while i'm typing an email or document in Word...right now i have a work-issued Dell Latitude D600 and i personally think it's a piece of crap because it always freezes on me. I'll take an ugly IBM as long as it doesn't freeze on me 3x a day. and i'm way too stupid to build a computer. that is way out of my league.

luder and crazy-sherm, could you recommend some model numbers of Dells and HPs? my sis has a Dell Inspiron 8500 or something like that...she likes it for the most part, but has had a few problems (battery life, DVD laser burned out, last month a Dell computer guy came to her apt. to fix her computer because it had "mechanical malfunction," etc.) with it and it's 1 year old.

footnote: i still use my dell desktop computer from 1998 at home. does that make me awesome or pathetic?

I actually work for IBM (soon to be Lenovo) and it'll be business as usual. IBM still has a vested interest in Lenovo as they retained 18% of the ownership (from what they are telling us). Additionally, Lenovo purchased all the R&D and engineering behind their PC line, so you should see no dropoff in quality over time. You may, however, see a drop in costs as Lenovo is committed to competing with Dell in price.

Most people don't even realize that IBM has been manufacturing their PCs and laptops in China for years.

If you can afford it, I'd always buy an IBM over a Dell. This deal is smoking however and it'd be hard to pass up.

these deals usually come at the end of dell's quarter. so 3 months from now we will see the same thing.

now the question is there is a need for a laptop in dental school?? i cna't seem to justify wasting 750 for a system that i won't have a use for

The difference between 7200 and 4200 is night and day on a laptop for anything and everything you do. The effect on battery life is next to nothing too. The external solution although cheaper would suck because it would be a pain to carry around.

I got in on this deal at the end of last quarter. Start checking slickdeals in about 3 months and you'll more than likely see it again:

I recently bought a Gateway M210 for school. Its the best looking and best deal on a laptop I could find. They went up like $150 right after I bought mine, so they're a little more expensive. Here's the link to a writeup I found. I like mine so far, its the size of an actual notebook and goes in my bag like any other book or notebook.
