What do you guys know about the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health? I was among the recent inductees in 2003, but we?re really not that active. If you have something to share, please do.:)

I also was inducted into Delta Omega. I'm sorry to say that our chapter isn't active at all.
I'm not sure we even had it??

Exmike's reaction shows the problem exactly.

Public health doesn't necessarily market Delta Omega as something that is important to have. I remember some folks trying to get a chapter started at Michigan, but I'm not sure what happened to them. If the purpose of DO was made more evident, maybe people would know what it was and would therefore be more inclined to support it.

Unfortunately folks, it seems like this is a regular problem for public health. I have a certification as a health education specialist, but there are folks in public health that don't know what a CHES is. I will say that the accrediation folks are trying to increase recognition, but they've got a long way to go.

PS Congrats emanresu on your induction.

Thanks for your replies (esp. H&T). I was just curious if other DO chapters were similar to mine.

I think that because integration of public health and medicine (for example, MD/MPH) facilitates collaboration, perhaps people will begin to think similarly of Delta Omega and Alpha Omega Alpha. At least it?s sure to become more widely recognized.

Emanresu,

I could only hope for the rise of Delta Omega, but for some reason I think that it would be minimal in the shadow of AOA. We'll work on getting the public health folks integrated (including myself - I'll get on the ball with DO since I am talking the talk without having walked the walk), and then we'll work on the medical side of things. But you are right in your observation that medicine and public health are moving back toward their integrated roots. All this to say that there is hope, but it may not happen any time soon.

Cheers,
H&T
