Good GPA, extraordinary ECs with below average DAT. I think you were smart in applying to private schools and you might receive some interviews. After all, everyone appreciates the determination and work ethic of a high-level athlete.

If you are not successful this year, retake the DAT and do well (21+). You should receive a ton of interviews.

if you cant get in apply for the post bacc in lecom! if you get 3.0 gpa or more you don't have to retake the dat. 18 is good for them... there's a pretty big thread about this post bacc in the post bacc forum

edit

I have to say that I get this information from people who have attended LECOM... do not take my word for it, they might be lying or telling the truth.

Thanks! Do people get accepted with those stats?
Yes, it's harder, don't get me wrong but it happens. Had a friend with a 3.3 cumulative, 3.4 science, 19 DAT (twice), and he got into Texas A&M on his first try, and btw he is far from a college athlete, or any sort of athlete for that matter.

He is not doubt an anomaly in the application cycle but it's possible.

Had another friend who had a 3.86 cumulative, 3.75 science, 19 on his DAT, and it took him 3 times to get into Texas A&M, they even made him reenroll in 12 hours for the fall to show his "commitment".

Before anyone asks they are both white/male. Also, I think both cases are not common but anything is possible I guess.

Thanks guys. Yeah LECOM has a post bac but it just guarantees an interview. I have ECU and UNC here. UNC is a long shot, ECU is 19 AA average. Hopefully one of the private schools will turn up. I'm originally from NY. Does anyone have any stats on Tourro? Do you all think it is a long shot for me to get in somewhere this cycle?

Anyone else's thoughts would be much appreciated! Thanks guys from above!!

I never understand how people have a science GPA higher than their overall GPA. All the people in my school that I know is the other way around.

Anyways, I am sure you could probably get accepted with those stats from 1 of the 22 you applied.

3.87o vs 3.96s because man I did not care about getting B's in GE courses lol.

OP- I think you have an excellent shot in-state, since ECU only accepts them. Otherwise, your chances are great for everywhere else!

It might just be my school, it focuses heavily on the sciences courses, and they are super hard. So any other non science courses that I take for my bio major are basically GPA boosters.

Thanks man! Yeah my science GPA was mainly done after undergrad. I shotguned my prerequisites in a year in some change. My actual BCP gpa is a 3.80. I just got screwed my freshman year because I took an environmental science class and got a C- lol. That's why my overall science is a 3.60. That GPA though is more representative of what I can do now. My sport took up a lot of time in undergrad.

Hopefully I will get in somewhere. Like I said, the majority of schools I applied to were all private!

Thanks! I just am just curious if I will be ok with the private schools (Touro, AT Still, Roseman, Western, etc.). I know really the only thing going for me are my ECs unfortunately and the fact that I did not "bomb" any section on the DAT. =|

Applying to 22 schools with your numbers, you should be totally fine.

Whoops 24 schools. Forgot I had UNLV and Creighton. Thanks Rand627! I do not have information through on LECOM and Touro Stats. However majority of the schools I applied to are 20-19 AA range....

Did you mean to say "great for everywhere else"? haha or not great?

Hey guys,

Some background: Student athlete (Olympic trials finalist) - Major sports accolades - Represented the US in international competition - graduated in 2015. I worked in finance for a year and decided to peruse dentistry last year. I have about 400 volunteer hours half dental half non. 500+ hours dental assisting. 275 hours shadowing. I applied to 22 schools basically all the private (LECOM, Tourro, AT Still Missouri) to name a few and in state (I'm in NC). I just wanted to hear everyone's opinion. I took the DAT last week. I am almost done with all my supplementals (4 left). I submitted everything in June before my DAT.

I know it is not a competitive score by all means. I have no score under 18 (orgo was 20). I know everyone posts threads about chances but here it goes. Thanks ya'll.

I think that your ECs are very abnormal in a good way so that you'll stand out. But that DAT score is a little low. Good thing you applied broadly. Wait and see what happens. good luck

What is the deal with UNLV? I know I am a little off with the scores but I know they have some weird way of formulating interviews. It is not exactly clear what the formula is from the other threads. Anyone care to chime in? Thanks y'all!

This is the formula (granted the thread is very old and it's possible it has changed):

Just interviewed at UNLV yesterday and Dr. Ancajas wanted us to post the correct formula to predict if your getting in or not. It is made up of two parts, part on is your DAT scores and GPA:

PART 1
((CUM GPA + SCI GPA)/8)x(RC/30)x((BIO+QR+OCHEM)/90)x75=A

PART 2
This is your interview performance: Student and faculty interview you and give you a 1-5 with 5 being the best applicant possible.

((Student interview)/5) x (Faculty interview/5) x 25 = B

A+B = 100 max

Those that have a 50-55 are competitive and those with a 55+ are pretty much in...

I will keep you all posted about interviews/acceptances. Do you guys know of anyone this cycle getting an interview with my stats? My DAT scores will probably take a week or 2 to be processed. I have sent all the schools my unofficial scores. Thanks!

Also, since my official DAT scores will not be until this or next week, would my interviews (if I have any god willing) be in January vs October and November? Thanks guys!

I have similar stats to you in every area and I have been a dental assistant for 2 years. 1 interview in 3 years so far.

I applied to 25 with 3.4 OGPA and 3.3 SGPA but with a 19AA 20TS 20 PAT. So far one interview. Hopefully more will come!

Awesome man! Hopefully my EC's will stick out. May I ask what were your EC's?

While in college I was in 2 honor societies and Phi Delta Theta fraternity. I worked as a life guard and swim instructor and specialized teaching people with mental and physical disabilities how to swim. I studied abroad in Australia, I restore cars as a hobby, and I'm currently doing breast cancer and pancreatic cancer research. I'm expected to be published in 2 papers!

Nice man! I am sure you will do just fine!! Any dental work experience?

I have no dental experience; I've only shadowed an orthodontist, periodontist, and a general dentist! I'm still looking into shadowing an endodontist! I feel like it was my personal statement that attracted the school. I told my story of how a girl hitting me in the face with a skateboard and chipping all my teeth led me to a career in dentistry! I easily had over $10,000 worth of procedures done to my mouth trying to fix my smile haha

Haha wow there you go! Try to jack up some more hours doing general dentistry shadowing and see if you can volunteer at one of the practices assisting. I cold called like 10 offices and got 6 different general dentists in all different areas (geographic location matters rural vs urban). That is what I did and I know a lot of schools like to see that! I will tell you how I do in the next month. My official scores will hit all my schools next week.

I will! Thanks for the advice and I wish you the best of luck this cycle!

Between 16 and 20 each year.

Dang. Do you mind sharing your background? Do you have any score under 17 on the DAT? My GPA would have been higher if I was traveling all the time for my sport in college. Also my GPA after college (most of the prerequisites is a 3.80). Do you have something extra other than dentistry? Like research or volunteering outside of the dental field? Please share! Happy to collaborate!

Full time student athlete like yourself, 3.6 oGPA (science is very similar). 15 on QR unfortunately, hopefully QR is still not the most important to most schools. Plenty of volunteering including a dental mission trip. I've been assisting for 2 years at 2 different offices under 5 different dentists. Shadowed multiple specialists.

Great! Yeah I have read that a 15 QR, even though is not important, holds a lot of people back... :( ( I HATE to be the person that brings bad news). My friends ( all 5 in dental school) say that if you were to have an 18 AA make sure nothing is under 17.... Everything else though from what I see and hear around is FANTASTIC. I assume you have other volunteering other than dental??

It is crucial for us to have no score under 17, just to show that we do not have a huge weakness even though our DAT's are average, we can argue that we are "solid" all around.

Please; anyone else feel free to chyme in!!

If you're NC resident, you'll get interviews from UNC and ECU for sure (from my previous experience as NC resident & second time applicant). Turn in the supplementals for those two ASAP if you haven't yet (ECU gives out interviews pretty fast, but UNC can take forever).

Does anyone have a cold hard stats regarding LECOM and Touro?

Haha no I did mean great, because your EC's really do help you stand out, and private schoolsl love your money lol. Best of luck! :)

Had 3 pre-December interviews thus far (2 instate) (1 out of state not private school). Is it true that someone with my stats will get post December private school interviews?

Congrats! I haven't had any yet lololol. Yes, you will probably get a couple post-Dec interviews at those other schools you applied to. I think maybe you might fall under like "2nd choice" so right now they're busy trying to get everyone they'd call their "1st choice" in so that they can extend offers of acceptance to them by Dec 1st, and thus you'll probably interview at those schools in Jan/Feb but DON'T LOSE HOPE! Anything can honestly happen!

Sorry should've clarified, I do have two scheduled for this month! But I haven't actually had any thus far! And I know it's because I applied super superrrrr late (end of August-mid September) so I'm okay with having post-Dec interviews lol. And yes, but don't lose hope. Your EC's are fabulous, they'll help tons! So just keep waiting patiently for those post-Dec interviews and acceptances to roll in :)

Damn you'll be fine!! I submitted my DAT scores like the first week of September. I am grateful for my 3 interviews. Have to be honest though I am surprised they were all public schools and not the private ones (since private ones seem to have lower stats historically)...Do they usually go about having most of their dental class come from post-December interviews?

Well no one really knows how adcoms work, except for themselves sooo who knows. At least you'll get in-state tuition for two of them and could apply for in-state at the other one hopefully! Generally you should pick a public one over a private one cause they give you the same degree lol and the public one would be cheaper. But that's a discussion for after Dec 1st ;)

Agreed! What is your state residency? I just found it interesting that I did not get a single interview from private schools pre-December. It seemed like people posting on here were keen that I would get into a private school.

Cali! And there's still time for Pre-Dec interviews to come (for a few schools). All the better that you have 3 public school interviews under your belt :)
It's also that I applied to competitive schools but hey I do have competitive stats so we shall see.

Is it harder to gain admissions into a dental school if your interview is Dec. 5th vs November 20th! I have my #4 at a private school Dec. 5th so I was just wondering. Feel free to chyme in anyone else!

So..yes. Because schools have already sent out their acceptance offers on Dec1st, so they know some of their seats are going to fill up immediately. Because of that, there are less seats to compete for, and that's why everyone is so set on having "Pre-Dec 1st" interviews. But as you can see by searching around on the forums, a lot of people were accepted after Dec 1st (like February even), and are currently attending that school. So although yes it is harder to get accepted if your interview is after Dec 1st, as long as you believe in yourself and do your best, you shouldn't worry :). Also I think that schools tend to let you know sooner about accepted/rejected if your interview is after Dec 1st. Just my opinion, hope it made sense
