hey guys,
there is currently no ratings for dental schools can anybody rate the schools ( and the basis of it)
as most of us apply for more than one schools & if got selected into more than one school which schools should be given topmost priority

UCSF, UOP, USC, UCLA, LOMA-LINDA, TUFTS, UTHSCA, UMN, UMICH, UIC, BU,NYU, U PENN, U CONN,

School that accepts you is the best:laugh:

On a serious note though, there cant be an absolute scale. It is individual decision based on length of program, the mission of the program, cost, family ties, and your specific goals.
Eg- UPENN and UCSF are strong research schools where as Pacific promises to make you the best Gen.Dentist. LLU and Boston each have about 22 Month programs, so **kinda cheaper.
If your family lives in either coast it may make better sense to go to school in the area.
What's important is what do you-the decision maker value the most.

I agree with La Fea!

UCSF, UOP, USC, UCLA, LOMA-LINDA, TUFTS, UTHSCA, UMN, UMICH, UIC, BU,NYU, U PENN, U CONN, UPitt

My top schools would be:

1. UTHSCSA: Research-Academics-faculty, SA-cost of living-Summers!, top notch medical university- Residency Match ease! (Johns Hopkins of the FTDs). (In the summertime girls got it going on!...)

2. UPitt- Cheap (cheaper than UTHSCSA,BU!), Good faculty-school, Pitt Football.

3. Columbia University Dental School: Ivy league, Residency match ease, strong didactic coursework, Very Prestigious program, Very High National Standing (Harvard of the FTDs)

4. UConn: Residency status is a problem here (atleast for me-Alien!), Good Academic Standing-strong didactic coursework, Residency Match ease.

5. UPenn: Ivy league, Residency match ease, strong didactic coursework. Cons=> Heavy tuition!

6.Loma Linda: Top notch Faculty-Research-Academics, Benign in all respect (not loud!). Cheaper by a dozen (K, than most). Good Clinical coursework, Residency match ease.

7. UMN: Research, Highly rated clinical coursework, Residency match ease. Cons=> Winters Unbearable (Extra-Royal Pain in the butt), HIGH TUITION, Relatively high cost of living.

8. U Colorado: Good Program overall, affordable, weather is not much of a problem. Not sure of the residency match ease, research exposure!

9. UCLA, UCSF, USC: Good overall program, California Weather (Can be a Pros/Cons), Beaches, Micro-bikini clad women-satisfaction guaranteed!:meanie:.
UCLA=> Residency match ease, not sure about other two.

10. Tufts: Good Faculty, students have nothing bad to say about this one school (though lack of patients is an issue with some!), Residency match ease. Boston "Student" Life! Proximity to Harvard (can be a pros/cons).
Cons=> High Tuition, High Cost of living. Weather: Royal Pain in the Butt!

11. BU: Ease of admission, Affordable (High cost of living is balanced out by below average tuition and other fees). Shorter length (22 months) of program. Weather: Royal pain in the butt!

12. UMich: Good program, Good-Decent National Standing. Not sure about residency match ease! Research exposure seem to be limited.

13. UIC: Residency status is the issue! Search SDN to read all the nice things about UIC. Cons=> Ghetto High crime region.

14. UOP: Very good clinical program. Cons=> Very very high tuition (plus added cost of living, a major disaster!)

15. NYU: Ease of admission! Cons=> 3 yrs, NYC cost of living, Winters: Royal Pain in the butt!

M.

PS Spare your BS, please! This is my personal view and not a rule of thumb!

PSS These are still the top (any number) schools, (cf. yeah you know where and which dental colleges and schools!

LLU is now 24 months and in total costs about 155 k.

UCONN, Columbia, University of Buffalo (not accepting applications for this year), Detroit Mercy, NYU, Marquette are 3 year programs.

That being said go to any 2 year program you can get in. If you get into a 2 year program then look into whats best for you, eg. family. Once you graduate you will be able to pay back your loans fairly easily. Rankings don't matter when you graduate.

Good luck

Good analysis. Here have some candy 😀
UCSF has ease of Residency match. USC I am not sure. Also w/ USC it is Problem Based Learning which has gotten mixed reviews.

Candy... Ah good! Thanks a lot, La fea.

I think with PBL, there isn't much of an issue with FTDs who have decent knowledge of clinical sciences. But it can be really very demanding for people with limited clinical exposure.

PBL is more like Troubleshooting... You troubleshoot only when you encounter some problem. To say, it lacks on certain areas of expertise major-ly while it tends to build strong fund of common disorders/diseases/dysfunction and treatment procedures. I am not sure if PBL can provide flexibility of approach to treat patients as individuals with different genotypical and phenotypical presentation.

If you can do your homework good-ly great-ly, you will be fine.

PBL => You are on your own, Charlie. S.O.S. (...---...)

M.
PS I have not applied to any school with PBL curriculum, mostly because I missed most of the deadlines.

PBL , ithink is better . at least you make your descions and you are treated as a doctor.
in other schools they see you as student doctors...

PBL is good only when, you and YOUR GROUP have strong theoritcal base. In USC, PBL is conducted by non-dental instructor. That undermines the entire system. It is completely not understandable that how come non-dental person teaches dentistry. Experience without sound knowledge could be disastrouse to the patients.

Also if your group does not have the sound base, it will be waste of time.

NOTE: USC has lowest graduation rate. That shows that how PBL system is failing.

As far as i have seen the schools at my interview i liked Tufts the best, they are very professional, rest i will tell you after a year at that school..... and have also heard a lot about Upenn.....

At the end of the day..that's it. Even w/ traditional, didactic instruction, you gotta put in your effort. That is to say, even w/ spoon feeding, YOU have to do the chewing and swallowing😀🙄

Hey Dagu

May be at USC, with PBL curriculum, they should consider to cut back on tuition and such. Wouldn't it be great if they can cut back 50 K from the tuition? It will be, then, my dream school and my temple of learning. *Sarcasm, intended*

They want prospective students to pay similar (or above average) tuition as with other schools with traditional curriculum and when our poor Charlie is an average student, it is plain ridiculous!

I do not mind PBL curriculum personally, I seriously do not mind to go back to my books often. If they can supply constant pool of patients, simulation labs, utilities, endless library resources, easy references and mostly if they can cut back some 50 K from the tuition... I will make an excellent PBL student. :meanie:

M.

PS Congratulations on your acceptance at Loma Linda.

Hey La Fea

With traditional curriculum, it is more like tube-feeding  (only problem being the discomfort caused by it 😱, it limits yourself to a particular school of thought which might limit your intellectual ability? :scared:). If you can handle the discomfort of feeding tube, it can do wonders for you! And by traditional, I mean not dictational-didactics but something that is complemented with simulations and 3D animations and such.

Speaking out off metaphorical monologue, I agree with you, I think with traditional curriculum even our poor Charlie who's an average student can survive his training and post-training life.

PBL also can do wonders for someone who is already a wonder... Someone with an IQ of above 140. With traditional curriculum, any IQ above 120 is good.

Again, these are my personal thoughts. I am not a statute to write down the rules of thumb for academic curriculum patterns.

Hey

There is nothing wrong in being a student doctor. All docs are but student doctors, it is a constant learning process. Fellows are student doctors, those into residencies are also Student doctors. I do not see how you cannot rationalize it and see it something to be looked down upon.

Even if you are 20 years out of dental school and a specialist, you should still take pride in being called as a student doctor... Mostly because you should (and you will?) always be learning and studying!

Just because someone does not feel you are capable (if that is what you are aiming at?), you do not have to go out and prove anything to that someone. The only one to prove is yourself...

You don't get it, do you?

Sorry you will have to find another way for that, dentistry is not the way... Try med school training and then a residency spot at JHU. 🙄

At-most you can do some short term courses in Anesthesio, OMS and/or Surgical Oncology... I hope you have great knowledge of medicine! 🙄
