😕 Is dentistry one the most difficult careers?? Let me know what you, think.
The overhead expense is pretty high,,,you have to finance your way through half of your life...You are also standing up most of the time with your back tilted causing some physical fatigue to neck and back...I really wanna know what you guys have to say on this one...

Nope, but it sure is dang difficult to spell, isn't it? And who does stand up dentistry, anyways?

No, I don't think it is one of the most difficult things a person could do with their lives, but I guess I have a biased opinion. I wouldn't recommend standing up doing dentistry since I think it is probably best to sit down and use magnification. In reality, I tend to think of dentistry as challenging and can't wait to get started. My excitement for the profession grew with every observation and continues each day.

In the end, each person must decide for themselves what is the best career choice. Regretably, some people live an entire life and never realize their true vocation. Take care. 👍

Difficult career? You can set your own hours, make good money, and you'll never be out of work unless you are terrible at it. I'd say it's a pretty sweet deal.

In that case, you might try looking at DentalTown, which contains many forums where practising dentists post their experiences, rather than posting in a dental student forum and getting frustrated when most of the responses are coming from dental students. 😀

The dentist I shadowed at and who is, in fact, our family dentist practices a stand up dentistry. I didn't even know dentistry can be done while sited. I've spent over 200 hours of shadowing and never saw him sit, but only in between patients visits. Anyways, he was suffering a severe back pain by the end of a work day. One time I even asked if it would be easier to sit, but he replied that he was trained like this and cannot get used to loops. I guess everyone's technique is different once graduated from d-school...

What is the proper way to practice dentistry? Do dental schools teach proper postures and proper way of holding instruments? Would this technique be different from one school to another?

A typical newyorker's response  ...

Ash: with this attitude you won't get any practical answers... Do some search and find out what SDN stands for!

Well, I agree with that "hopeful student".

Great hours, great income, ability to help others, ability to use great technology, own a business, sit inside and listen to music all day.

NOT one of the most difficult careers. In fact, I can name about 100+ more difficult careers without even thinking about it.

With minor variances it is going to be the same from school to school. That goes for ergnomics and how to hold instruments and handpieces. There ARE proper ways to use our instruments.

Gavin:

Please name all of those 100 plus careers. I'm interested in hearing them. Wait until you get into clinic this spring and you may not find it quite as easy as you think. However, I will say there are aspects of your comment that do have merit and I greatly enjoy being a practicing dentist--at least for the most part.

Well, my belief is that if you do anything for long enough, you are going to want a change. I've spoken to professors, doctors, lawyers, and dentists. The response depends on the individual, and tends to change perspective with one's age.
