i think you would be much better off working in academia then as a dental hygienist as a DMD

because maybe you want to work in a saturated market? there are many small towns in cali that are hiring new grads. a friend of mine got hired a year ago for $500/day salary.

If your licensed, you can do that. If your not licensed, then your bound by the regulations of whatever state your looking to work in and can do (legally atleast) only what an assistant is allowed to do under supervision of a licensed practicing dentist)

Yes, if you have a dental license.

Many hygienists make just as much as dentists. My wife's boss pays her hygienist $400/day, 1 day/week. My friend recently hired a new grad dentist for $350/day,2 days/week….and he is very surprised that there are a lot of new grads who are willing to accept such low salary.

There has been a huge pay cut for associate dentists due to the poor economy, state budget crisis and the elimination of adult medicaid. The company I work for recently switched from paying the dentists per diem to paying them 23% of the production. So if you make $1000/day (and this is tough to do…in a medicaid/HMO office), you get paid 230 for that day:eek:. Last year, SmileCare (another big corporate office) decided to cut every body's salary 5%. It is very tough in California. If you want to live here, you have to specialize.

I just wanna thank everybody for taking the time to reply :)

I totally agree with CharlesTweed... being a dentist or a specialist, it is tough!

Also, don't forget about signing the contract if you are working for Western Dental or any other corporate dental companies! Most are signing away 18 to 24 months to work for them!

There are many other states where the markets aren't as saturated, and soemtimes even within a saturated state, there's plenty of rural areas where the market isn't saturated either.

What the hell is going on in California? UCLA rasing tuition by 32% USC dental school costs $300,000? And dentists are making as much as hygeinists? I'm glad I live in TX for a lot of reasons...

Don't brag too much my friend. Texas gained 750,000 residents at the same time 1.5 million people left California from 2000-2008. You better hope these unemployed in California don't move to Texas en masse and then vote in the same politicians that ruined California's economy with extreme taxes, regulations, and unions. A company I once worked for, Toyota, recently announced they're closing their Corolla/Tundra factory in NorCal because it is the costliest place to do business. Guess where they're relocating work to? Arlington Texas. Congrats!

True. My brother, now working for SmileCare in NorCal, has seen his days cut from 4 to 3 and now to 2 days a week. Also, there was a recent article in the Orange County Register talking about the extreme difficulty experienced hygienists are having in finding job.
