  1. Resident [Any Field]
So im an m1 md student at some school in the northeast. I'm from the south (born/raised/went to college) and want to go back for residency (Florida specific) since that is where all my family lives. What are some things I can do that can help me match back at this area of the country. I know being from a school in the NE probably isn't a solid start. Just curious how I can make it profoundly obvious that I want to be back in this part of the country when it comes time to apply. Im an m1 but leaning towards anesthesia pretty heavily just in terms of not gunning for the most competitive specialty. Any help is appreciated.

- You can reach out to some anesthesiologists in academic institutions in Florida to do some research with them. Maybe reach out to Uni of Florida's anes PD or an equivalent position.
- Also, during the residency application cycle, I believe you can send pre-interview letters to Florida programs just in case your desire to return to Florida isn't readily apparent in your application already.
- For anes, since it isn't that competitive, you will be less restricted geographically so I think you'll be in a great position to match more flexibly in the location you want, if you do well in step 2 and maintain a great track record in your preclinical and clinical years. Sprinkle in some ECs you actually care about and a few pubs and you're set.
- If you're still anxious, get the contact info of alumni who matched in Florida, in your preferred specialty or otherwise for advice

People from NE schools match in the SE all the time.

Do as well as you can in clinical and step 2. Maybe an away rotation would help? Otherwise just target the bulk of your apps to your desired region. List your permanent address as Florida on your ERAS - that gives a bit of a regional bias "bump." You can also demonstrate this in custom personal statements or in secondaries if applicable.

Anesthesia is not the most competitive. All there is to do now is do medical school. Come application time there are some pretty low effort things (writing letters to places, including your area, etc. in your personal statement). I have no idea what the field of anesthesia looks like in terms of Florida programs but I'd imaging UF, UMiami, and USF are probably respectable places. You shouldn't have trouble at all. The trouble comes when you want to go back to California or if you want to apply to a competitive specialty like Dermatology or Orthopedic Surgery. Even then though, the only thing to do now is focus on classes.

Hey OP! I'm an M3 in the midwest who wants to go back to Florida for residency. I'm not super familiar with anesthesia, because I'll be applying IM. My first plan was to crush Step 1. It'll probably be P/F for you, so shift that focus to Step 2. Second, try and do as well as you can in M3 on your rotations. Get solid comments, LORs, and try and honor as many rotations as you can. Third, you can make it super clear in your PS why you want to return to Florida when ERAS time comes. I am making this abundantly clear in my PS because I want the programs to know that I really do want to go there (especially since my Step score is above average for many of them). Networking with PDs and/or auditions may be a good idea depending on how competitive of an applicant you are. I personally will probably not do any auditions at my top programs because I am a competitive applicant, so I will be doing that at programs lower down on my list to show interest in the region but not screw up my chances at my top choices. As others mentioned, I don't think anesthesia is ridiculously competitive so it shouldn't be that much of a struggle as long as you make your reasons for wanting to be in FL clear. Good luck!

Get good step 2 scores. Do research. Get good grades 3rd year. Do an away rotation in your area of the country. You do those things and you'll match where you want to go.

On ERAS, put down your Florida address. This is an easy way to unlock regions. I’m from a school in the Northeast and I have a classmate who put down a Florida address for their permanent and a Texan address for their mailing address. Out of my friends, she’s the only one who got a lot of invites in both regions. She is not a 240+ on steps kinda person either
