I have been working towards getting a neurosurgery (or other surgical) residency. I was just diagnosed with diabetes and it looks like I will be on insulin in the near future (meds right now). My question is whether or not surgery would be a practical choice for a diabetic (odd hours, and eating, excess stress . . .)? I'd appreciate any experiencce or insight. Thanks.

One of our best transplant surgeons here is insulin-dependent diabetic and they will actually bring him a cookie or some juice during long cases. He does just fine.

And there's always the option of having an insulin pump - a friend of mine in med school had one and it worked out well.
