Ok, so here it goes. I interviewed at UCLA about Oct 20ish. At the end of my two hour interview(I met with Dr. Fulco), my interviewer handed me 2 hazelnuts. On each of them the letters "UCLA" were handwritten in blue sharpie. I'm not kidding. Dr. Fulco then proceeded to tell me to feed the nuts to the squirrels on campus for good luck. Did anyone else get this treatment?

I thought it was more random then the medical school application process itself. After the 2 hour interview I sure did think it was different from anywhere else I have traveled. Dr. Fulco was incredibly nice and I enjoyed talking with him.

OMG, SlippingSloth, he did that to another interviewee in front of me (I was picking her up to give the tour). It was the most bizarre thing ever.

Also, Dr. Fulco has been lecturing to the first-year students this block. He's hilarious. 👍

He was the nicest guy I have interviewed with. The hazelnuts just sealed the deal 🙂. If you were about to give a tour on October 21 that person could have been me. Not likely, but hey you never know.

Like always I am still hoping to join you at UCLA. Good luck with exams

Well? Don't keep us in suspense... did you feed the squirrels or not?

Is blue Sharpie toxic to squirrels? Is it bad karma to poison your lucky med school squirrel(s)?

Thanks, SlippingSloth. Actually, my exams aren't for another month. The second-years have their exams starting today, though.

knitwitty, I highly doubt that blue Sharpie would kill the UCLA squirrels. Those guys are scary! I don't think they ever die. 😉

I did feed them to a squirrel on the campus. Well, at least tried to. Interview night I was staying with a friend on campus and came across one. I rolled the nuts into the shrubbery near the squirrel.

I think squirrels crack the shells and only eat the kernel of the nut. I could be wrong. Toxic sharpie would not be cool....only positive karma 🙂

No squirrels were harmed in the making of this med student

That totally happened to me too! I thought having a 2.5 hour interview was kind of strange, but then when he handed me the nuts and told me about feeding the squirrels, well, that was definitely the strangest comment I've heard in interviews! He was a really nice guy, though, and he got me really excited about UCLA.
