Did anyone get a medical gift windfall this Christmas?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got a Vermont Teddy Bear dressed in surgical scrubs, holding an x-ray.

Not (directly) medically related gift - but I did get a BOSE headset. They have awesome noise cancellation. Now much easier to tune out the annoying kids in class

I shouldn't do this, but I can't help it, since my life revolves around music; Bose headphones are terrible for the price. I suppose they make a fine gift, though, since you didn't pay for 'em.

I got an asskicking bass to add to my collection. Of course, I got nothing else since several relatives went in on it, but I sure can't complain.

Nothing medical related. Thank god.

For those that got scrubs for Christmas, don't wear them to:
1) Undergrad classes
2) To a hospital when you are there to visit someone

The school thing is just obviously tacky. Why pre-meds wear scrubs to lecture, I never will understand. The hospital thing, its obvious. Don't try to be something you are not in a hospital. I volunteered at a hospital for a few years and have lost count of all the wannabes who wear their scrubs to the hospital. Don't confuse the staff and others that work there. Besides, if you get caught I would hope they can ban you. (Read: Cases of people pretending to be health professionals to steal things, even babies).

End of rant. I feel a little better now.

Even though I like it's noise cancellation - what is up with the whole vacuum the heck out of my ear. It's like someone poked a dyson in my ear and is sucking the ear wax out!

you obviously know very little about sound quality, electronic components, or the physics of a good set of headphones or speakers, some people do and they can tell the difference between these headphones and those piece of **** ear buds that you think sound so great with your ipod, limit ignorant comments to yourself please

That is weird, and annoying. But you get used to it and stop noticing it.

I got a trip to mexico for the first night of hannukah. Woo hoo, seven more nights!

Maybe for the second night I'll get medical school tuition paid for.

you dont seem to know much either. Bose long ago lost their edge, and while they offer substantial improvement over ipod standard buds, they are certainly not worth the money. you are paying for bose marketing. try some sennheiser 600s, or shure e6's if you want buds.

but more importantly, don't go berating other people when you clearly don't know what the crap you're talking about.

Thank you femmedargent.

My basic point was that paying 300 dollars for headphones is just crazy...you can buy a decent computer system for that price these days!

Except he didn't say "Bose headphones? What a waste of money!" Rather, he said "$300 for headphones? What a waste of money!" He knows a lot less than you give him credit for, and lobster's post was right on. You're right that Bose isn't worth it, but you also agree that there are great options at that price point.

And here's what I meant. $300 for headphones is crazy to you. $300 for Bose is crazy to people who know enough about sound quality and what is and is not good. $300 for other headphones isn't crazy at all if you're into music enough to get your money's worth... and believe me, yes, you can percieve the difference in quality.

and? a low-end Ferrari would buy you a decent house in most of the US, but that's not the point. Someone obviously has enough money to indulge in the finer things in life. Big deal. How much do YOU think is too much on headphones? I think you need to spend at least $50 to get something worth listening to.

mmmm....I agree 🙂 $300 for Bose is a bit much for what you get, but $300 for Sennheiser, Grado, AKG, Beyerdynamic, etc. headphones will land you into audio nirvana 😎

I got a pig made out of crystal. now it can sit next to the pig made of jade that sits on my desk at work.

My piano students were all on vacation and I had ZERO income this month and my bank account was just drained on living expenses and food and spring tuition, and for the holidays I got money for 2 months of rent and food!
*wiggles!!!!!!*

I remember when I was a kid and I would have gagged at this gift and asked where the nintendo was! ha!

if it's just some gunner trying to get "in the zone," then yeah, it's dumb. However, some of my friends wear scrubs to class because they work immediately before/after class, and going home to change isn't in the schedule. I'm sure somebody wondered why I was wearing an EMT uniform to class, but I had just finished a 24 hour shift, and home was much farther away than school, and time wasn't available. Also, scrubs are pretty comfy. I prefer jeans, but one of my friends wears scrub pants all the time. His brother is a doc, so he gets lots of scrubs from his brother.

prentension aside, the bottoms are f***ing comfortable. but the smell will give you away. ewwww, hospital.

I didn't get anything in the medical dept. I'm pretty used to my family not "getting it" about medicine, so it's okay. I'll be up to my eyeballs in it soon enough ...

happy holidaze all

lol the bose headphones are hella $$$$ and the ones they have at the apple stores which sell for $150 are not worth it. Those 300 i assusme are the bose quiet comfort noise cancelling headphones blah blah blah. I havent used them but i cant imagine them being worth 300 bucks. There are cheaper alternatives that do the same thing. Have you heard of sony? LIKE.NO.OTHER

I use the MDR-EX71 earbuds for my ipod, and for 50 bucks retail or 32 online they are definetly worth the money. They are tons better than those ****ty ipod headphones. The sound quality is excellent, they acutally fit in your ear and so that amplifies the sound so you dont need to turn out volume up too much. They completely block out other sounds, if you put then in your ears you can hear yourself breathing our chewing if your eating when your not listening to anything. I use them all the time when i fly from coast to caost, they block out the aircraft noise and they arnt big and bulky like the boise quiet comfort headphones. I would think they would be great for commuting anywhere.

However there is one downside to these headphones. The protective wiring is really crappy, it starts peeling off after a while if you arnt careful. When i bought my first pair, this happened after having them for almost 3 months. I called sony and they send me a replacement since it was still under warranty. The replacements eventaully broke too, after like 4.5 months. They werent in warranty so they didnt replace those.....damn. So i went and got another set of headphones and this time i intend to use them only when i travel.

I havent tried sure, but the cheapest ones i saw were 100 bucks and that looked kinda pricey.

for xmas, i got *only* med school-themed stuff. "I was going to get you that classical guitar you wanted, but i thought you needed stuff for med school(socks, backpack, jacket, all complete with med school logo, a frosty the snowman stethoscope, etc)" Santa said.

!doh! 😳

i know i need that stuff; even the themed scrubs (to sleep in). i got scrubs last year for xmas to wear while studying for the mcat. i felt like a dork (can i say turd?) in the library, but i was among many others doing the same there.

hahaha, i can beat everyone here!!!

I got:

a) when the air hits your brain, book.
b) Acland's DVD Atlas of the Human Body (6 DVDs)
c) a freakin 4 foot tall maniquin(sp?) with 40+ body parts that you can take out. During my interviews, I saw similar ones in the actual anatomy labs, but now i have one at home!!! He is HUGE!!! 😀

Last Christmas I received a Fischer-Price doctor kit. 👍

and then take out all Freddy's (my maniquin's) body parts out and put them back together again? How sweet!

Ooh cool!

I got an ornament of Santa wearing a stethoscope, Complications by Atul Gawande, and Netter's anatomy flashcards (which are AWESOME).

Also, I got a puppy!!!! He may not be medically related, but I think he wins the prize of Most Awesome Present in the Universe 😍 😍 😍

I got a cool stethescope from my dad. Family heirloom. It was my grandfather's. I started crying. I hope I get in so that I truly deserve it.

I got an acceptance to Med school, a guitar (dont know how to play..going to sound awful for months i guess), and a new bed.

I got into med school!

And who cares if people wear scrubs around? That's silly.

Eeek. I try to stay away from those headphones and really any while ones in general. It's like they're screaming, "I have an ipod. Come and mug me!!"

I guess I just think they're tacky. Even worse are those who wear their ipods, cellphones and other accoutrements on a lanyard around their neck. Aren't they afraid they're going to get it caught in something??

LOL, guess I just had the type of parents who would describe the numerous ways I could kill/maim myself on the things I wanted as I grew up.

Also, beponychick.. we need to be study buddies because you hit the jackpot. I'm way jealous!

Got one in Sept for my birthday... Yes, hahah, very amusing 🙄

Nothing medical for Xmas - my parents sent my wife and I gift cards to Borders which I'll be burning to buy a Harrisons Int med text. Hey, I'm a nerd and it 's interesting. 😀

You can always get a Physician Desk Reference with that gift card too.

On a more serious note, I think the things like stethescopes and the instrument which you use to check the ears and nose can be useful gifts to give cuz the good instruments are generally expensive. So if the person gets the right one and not the cheap ones, then it is actually worth it.

Scrubs....ehh not a big fan of them.

I gave a stethescope to a friend for his graduation.

I got scrubs and a doctor-themed ornament. My 7-year-old niece got a doctor kit and a personalzed white coat. I played with the fake doctor kit more than she did. It has one of those fake syringes that looks like it's drawig blood. It was awesome. 👍

I got Milton-Bradley's game "Operation."

I actually kinda enjoy it!
