In light of my previous post of what various geographies call organic chemistry, i've divided my second poll into three categories. 1) west coast 2)central 2) east coast. please choose the region where you took organic chemistry and what it was called.

Hmm...so far, looks like there's twice as many east coast students on sdn than west coast/central.

So..here's the synopsis so far,

Majority of East Coast people say it's "Orgo"
Majority of West Coast people say it's "O-chem"
Majority of Central people say it's "organic".

I went to McGill (Montreal) and took "Org"

Did... did you just bump a 6 year old thread?

At my university the majority of people called it Orgo, but this really gets on my nerves because it's not spelled "Orgonic." Anyway, I heard other people call it O-Chem as well, but I usually preferred to call it just plain old "Organic," or even "Organic Chemistry" if I knew the person I was speaking to was non-scientific.

Epic bump.

We call it OChem.

central. orgo at northwestern. although the uchicago kids call it ochem, i believe, in a pathetic attempt to pander to east coast grandeur

edit: no offense meant to east coasters, just uchicago people :)

it is most def. orgo (east coaster here) and yay for 6 yr old threads, they need love too

WESTSIDE...specifically...LA

definitely ochem. i had never heard orgo til SDN and it still makes zero sense.

Here in the good ol' west (Utah), we call it O-chem.

went to school on the east coast and we DEFINITELY say ORGO...

my brother (college in california) says o-chem (barF!!)

another thing ive noticed is that while i say 'ec' (for economics) my brother and most people i've asked in california say 'econ'
.

Ochem and econ! Good ol' California :D

"ec" could be a lot of things, econ is a better shortened version IMO

In central California we say o-chem. I have also heard organic but far less frequently. Never heard "orgo" before this thread.

upper midwest for college - orgo.

pacific northwest for life post-college - o-chem.

Y'know I really hope that some day during my residency, when I'm waiting for lab results or something, and I have a free moment, I'll remember that one pre-med website I used to go to. I'll open it up and lurk for a second or two only to find that someone has inexplicably bumped my "Who watched the Lost season finale?" thread from 2008.

P.S. We call it "Organic" in KY.

I dont know why LikeClockWork and I always post right after one another, but

I took O-Chem.

I was a Chem major so I also took GChem, AChem, and PChem. It fits with the system.

Must be some subliminal Kentucky thing...

And I guess "Organic" is not state specific if you took "O-chem." I guess maybe it's more based on what college one went to?

This might sound like a stupid question.
But why does the name of the stupid course matter? We all understand that we are learning Organic Chemistry in ochem, orgo, and organic.
Oh I see ppl had nothing better to do at 2 Am.

East Coast: OChem

But I do agree, most east coast schools do appear to call it "Orgo"...mine's weird

East coast:

orgo, gen chem, pchem and econ

So..here's the synopsis so far,

Majority of East Coast people say it's "Orgo"
Majority of West Coast people say it's "O-chem"
Majority of Central people say it's "organic".

I'm in Dallas, TX and EVERY single person I know calls it O-Chem.

east coast: mostly orgo but I've heard organic before but never o-chem.

this thread is so funny! i can't imagine people calling it anything but "ochem" and here you are saying youve never heard anyone say ochem....its just crazy to think how different things are in differnet parts of the country...its kind of a trip.

On the Best Coast it's ochem, who cares what the rest of the country says?
WESTSIDE MOTHERF**KERS!!!

Orgo. Pennsylvania
But ochem one state away in Ohio

In Virginia (Does this count as South or East... or both?), I took orgo.

For us, it's gen chem, orgo, IA (instrumental analysis) and then pchem.

East coast. Ochem. At another school on the east coast I know they call it orgo. But it's not orgOnic....?

WESTSIDE...specifically...LA

definitely ochem. i had never heard orgo til SDN and it still makes zero sense.
Word... it is definitely Ochem on the west. And, like you, I never heard of orgo until SDN.

How bout this?

I took Ochem in California while my best friends took Organic in Florida.

Orgo in the Midwest (Michigan)/ East Coast

We call it "Orgo" in the Midwest...I've heard a lot of Californians refer to it as "O-Chem." I think someone already mentioned this...

We called it Organic at the school I went to in the south.

However, there is this one big school ~60 miles away from mine where I know 2 people took organic chemistry. One of them referred to it as Orgo while the other called it O-chem. Go figure.

I'm from the south and I call it hell.

Primarily "orgo," organic second, o-chem a distant third.

Central (Southwest).

A bit of all 3, but mainly OChem in the midwest.

University of Michigan: "Orgo"
