Difference between a US and Canadian residency

I know that many residencies in the US differ in length compared to Canada and I was wondering how this would effect the nature of the residencies. If a residency is shorter in the US (4 years in US compared to 5 in Canada) would it be a general rule (I know all residencies are different) that US residencies are more intensive (more hours/week) to make up for the shorter residency?
