Hi everyone, I have a quick question.

What exactly is the difference between a residency and a fellowship. For example, I want to do oncology/hematology. That means 3 years of IM residency and 3 more of onc/heme fellowship.

What exactly makes the residency different from the fellowship? Hours worked? Pay? Level of interaction with patients/independence? Just the name sounds better?

Also does anyone know what you have to do if you want to be a pediatric oncologist/hematologist (ie where do you fit in pediatrics in your residency/fellowship).

Thanks!!

fellowship is what you do after residency. it's for further specialization. so like if you did res. in internal medicine, you can do fellowship in nephrology, cardiology, etc. i think the pay is higher, but not significantly more. you still work like a slave for minimum wage. people do fellowship to specialize and/or to get into academic medicine.

You would do a residency in peds and fellowship in pedi-heme/onc
