I am an English major, and my pre-med advisor has told me that is it unwise for me to take Bio 100 (with labs, of course - it would still count as a pre-med class) because it is boring. Instead, he advises me to take Bio 200 and Bio 201 because they would be a better preparation for the MCAT.

What do you guys think? Should I take Bio 100 and 200 -- or start with Bio 200 and then Bio 201 (201 has NO LAB); I do plan on taking other Biology classes as well in the following years.

BIOL 100 General Biology I 3 s.h.

Acquaints students with fundamental biological concepts and illustrates the application of these principles to everyday life. Emphasizes the relationship of human biology to evolution, the environment, health, and biotechnology. Lecture and laboratory.

BIOL 200 General Biology II 4 s.h.

(Previously BIOL 105) Covers structure and function of plants, especially flowering plants, including anatomy, morphology, physiology, evolution, and life histories. Also studies the major groups of animals emphasizing "type" animals in each phylum. Classical principles are presented in a case history approach. Representatives of the major phyla are studied using both the microscope and dissection techniques. Lecture and laboratory.

BIOL 201 Introduction to Molecular & Cell Biology 3 s.h.

(Previously BIOL 211) Lecture provides an introduction to biological models and their roles in carrying out cell functions. Key cellular processes such as respiration, photosynthesis, assembly of proteins, and cell division are presented. The laboratory uses modern techniques to study enzyme action, to grow and observe living cells, and to analyze cell structures. NO LAB.

Thank You!

Do you have cliffs notes for this post?

The only class there you really need for the MCAT is the 201. 200 might help but plants and stuff are boring. Is it possible to take the 201 and physiology or micro? That would be ideal in this case.

yeah, 201 looks to be the most relevant to the MCAT. not sure how useful 200 is, but if your premed advisor is sure it preps you for the mcat then take that too

I didn't run into any phyla or taxonomy stuff and never encountered anything about plants. I took a similar gen bio class back in the day and it was a waste of time. Don't take it if you don't have to.

*DISCLAIMER*
If you actually find that stuff interesting you should take it.
