Would students who completed IM residency and then decide to instead of apply for fellowships apply for a field like anesthesia be at a disadvantage as compared to those students who directly out of med school apply for anesthesia?

I have heard stories in which applicants have found it hard to get into another residency like radiology, anesthesia, or ER after having completed IM as compared to a 4th year medical student directly applying for these residencies. Thats why I am asking the question.

1. The government (Medicare) will only subsidize your education for so many years, so completing an IM residency first takes away from that money in any future residency, making programs less likely to accept you over someone for whom they will be paid the entire sum of money.

2. Double-posting (in the anesthesia forum) is a violation of the TOS.

3. You are a pre-med. You have a long way to go. See which ones you like when you are on your clinical rotations and then apply accordingly.

Thanks for spotting that. :)

Cross posting is a TOS violation, as Socialist notes. Therefore, this thread is being closed. If you have any other tips for the OP, please follow the link above to discussion in the gas forums.
