Just as a started I would like to say thank you to all those who post on SDN. You all have been a great help throughout the process. Also, this is my first time posting and hopefully something good will become of it.

I just wanted to get an idea of how many of you are going to be in the DMU class of 2011. I know that I will be and I'm super pumped. Its gonna be a great time, though we all know it will be tough. Post a response and your thoughts about the school. I am anxious to hear.:D

GoldenGustie,
I am also going to be a part of the DMU class of 2011, and I am as excited as ever!! We are ready to embark on a long, difficult, but very rewarding road towards our DPM degree.:) I am very confident that DMU will provide us with the necessary tools to enable us to become successful physicians, it will be our responsibility to utilize those tools to our benefit. I'd also like to thank all you fellow SDN'ers for you informative posts and desire to see us "pre-pods" succeed!!:D As a last note, for those of you who will be attending DMU in August, what are your plans for the next few months?

Do you mean Gustavus Adolphus "Gustie"?

I went to MSU for a year, then had a full scholarship to GAC and went there for a year. Then decided to go back to MSU for the rest of my education.

I am glad to see someone else from MN going into Podiatry. Are you planning on comming back to MN for residency and placement?

That is correct. I'm a GAC graduate all the way (whatever that is suppose to mean). Representing podiatry for MN is huge because I don't feel there is much advertisement about the field as being equal to MD and DO programs. I would love to come back here for residency and eventually practice here. There are some top-notch programs and great Pods around the area!

I agree:thumbup:

Have you shadowed the PM&S-36 DPM in Mankato? I heard he was pretty good. This is the area that I hope to come back to. Where did you grow up? Who did you shadow?

I grew up on a farm outside of Fairmont, about 60 miles south of Mankato. I was hoping to find a place for me around the Mankato area or the Minneapolis area.

Also, the only way I would go back to Mayo (Rochester) is if I could get a surgery position. They are very traditional and have a couple F&A orthopod specialist who only do lower extremity. They do have 3 DPM's in the Gonda building and are building a new vascular center. However, these DPM's only do non-surgical work as well as research and teach Orthopod resident.

I'll be there too and I am very happy. I just got back from Barry but I'm definitely going to DMU.

Yeah I have my seat reserved. This should be interesting

I shadowed a couple guys at Health partners/Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Great guys and even better surgeons. All of the residents in the program are from DMU and none had a bad thing to say about the school. Right now I live near Mound, which is just a short drive from minneapolis. I'm planning on moving down to Des Moines this spring (march sometime) just to get everything set up. The seem to have a pretty tight knit group of students down there and I'm getting more excited every day!

Regions appears to be a pretty good program. Although its new, I like the fact that its integrated with the U of M. I believe that they only allow 1-2 residents per year. Of course there is Mercy and Hennipin County programs as well.

At Scholl in my class of about 100 or probably less now, there is only 3 people from MN.

Podiatry as a whole is very tight knit compared to other medical programs. Good Luck at DMU, its a good school.

Yeah they might get to met Jonwill, Gustydoc, Ilzarob, and Dr_Feelgood. That is worth the 22K/year. :)

And it's probably worth at least 22K a yr to not meet me... Lol.

Alright another Gustavus grad! As far as I know myself and one of the first year students are the only GAC alum at DMU. You made the right choice in if you want to head back to MN. We have a core clerkship with two of the three programs up there and I plan on spending time at all of them next year. Also there seem to be a lot of DMU alum practicing in Minnesota so that always helps too. Congrats on the acceptance!

Thanks GustyDoc! I'm pumped to be starting at CPMS next fall and the core clerkships that they have set up in MN is one of the reasons why DMU was first on my list. GAC needs to start advertising the profession more because it offers so much. Maybe someday we can have something to do with changing that fact around campus.

Hello everyone,
I will be joining everyone at DMU next year. I just mailed my signed letter and my check. Now comes the hard part - waiting to move in and start classes!

Congrats! Don't worry, time will fly and before you know it, you'll be falling asleep in biochem.

It's exciting and congrats, I personally couldn't be any happier, but just remember this time off cause come October and November of your first year, you'll be wondering what the hell you got yourself into. Just study and have a good time, that's my only advice-Oh and don't ever, ever, ever **** talk about your fellow students, it will come back to you in a big and bad way-trust me!!

Whoa whoa whoa... did I miss something!?! Something scandalous happened???

That is so true

I was like all of you last Nov wanting to start studying back then. Trust me, take some relaxing time off because Med school will definitly give you plenty of stuff to study for. I'm just glad to be getting through all of these test every 1-2 weeks and waiting for Thanksgiving.

Remember what its like studying like crazy for finals in undergrad. In med school its like that every week.

DMU did a great job of clarifying on interview day that Pod school isn't going to be a breeze (nor did I think this before applying). However, do many students enter into school thinking its going to be easier than MD or DO school? Also, what are some good habits to have before school starts? Thanks all.

Wahoo!! Just got the acceptance letter from Des Moines with a scholarship. Man, sometimes more choices make things harder :D

Time Management is key.

You cannot study all of the time because that will make you go insane and burn you out. However, you need to know when to study.

It is best to study everything that you covered from the lectures the same day. Although, some times it may seem difficult when you have a test in a particular subject that week, it is very important to study everything in a even pace like your going to be tested the next day for it.

Some of the traps people fall into is focusing on one subject only for a week and then studying another subject the next week. This can make you fall behind because you will have already forgot your lecture by the time you start your homework material. One subject that people can easily fall behind on is Biochem. Because you cover so much volume of material in a short period of time, if you slack a few days, you have a lot of making up in the end.

To make a long story short, study frequently, manage your time wisely, and have fun whenever possible. Med school is by no means impossible to get though, it just takes disipline, motivation, and a desire to learn. Many people I know find it a challenging but rewarding and fun experience.

Good Luck:thumbup:

congrats to all on the choice. (why am I getting sucked back into SDN, oh wait another way to procrastinate...) Hopefully the 2011 class will have a more even sex ratio haha, well I guess it doesn't matter because 1/4 of you or more will probably be married and have a kid or two (not a bad thing, just a strange occurrence at DMU, more the atmosphere the school has I think)

Hey guys I just got accepted to DMU and now get to relax until august. If there is any 2011er's out there, it would be cool to chat on here and get to know each other a little before school starts. Just a thought.

I don't know if I want to give names out but you should know him as he knew who you were when we were talking/stalking you last night. Gotta keep the anoniminity going right? Unless you're oncogene, then just look for the guy drinking at the casino all by himself

It seems like everyone coming in is from certain 'feeder' schools. Gustavus and now the new one SDSU

Lol yea, I really didn't hide much with my name. Hopefully I can live up to the academic excellence of the current SDSU pod student(s).

how many students at cpms are from sdsu? what other "feeder schools" are there?

I dont know for sure how many SDSU pod students there are but I have been informed that a good number of students come from BYU every year.

I guess discusdan and I have heard the same thing.

I hear there's a stud from UW in the 2010 class. Shout out to U of Washington!!

I haven't heard, I know.:D

There are quite a few of us in each class.
