Hi all! I have an intevriew on April 4th at DMU and I was just wondering if anyone can offer any advice about the school, interview, where to stay, etc. I'm coming from Cali, and I've never been to the mid-west, so I can use all the help that I can get. THanks everyone!

Unfortunately DM Airport is not cheap to fly into. I was able to drive for my interview. Most of the people who interviewed with me had flown into either Kansas City or Omaha and had rented a car to drive from there as it is only about 2-2.5 hours from each. This had saved them some money on flights. If you can opt to stay with a student, for one it is free, second of all it is a good way to get an idea of the student life while you are in medical school. You can see their notes, books, lifestyle, etc. As for the interview, don't sweat it. It is a very relaxed day and the interviewers are really intereste in getting to know you as a person and if and how you would fit into their program. The school and everyone associated with it (i.e. students, staff, and faculty) are very nice and extremely supportive of the school. The students are very important to the school. Just go and enjoy the day and best of luck. Hope this helps a little any questions feel free to email me. [email protected]

check with admissions, they have a list of current students who are willing to take in interviewees. i would let students stay with me, but i have a studio apt with no couch, and I dont think ppl want to sleep on the floor the night before an interview. its also really cold here in iowa right now. dress warmly, early april might still be cold. good luck!

I'm thinking of flying into OMaha and taking the greyhound from there to DEs Moines. It's only about $45, and that way I can get a ticket for about $250 instead of $900! Crazy! Anyways, are taxis and such accessible in the area? The bus stop is about 3 miles from the school. Also, does anyone know what a reasonable price for a hotel is? Thanks for all yor input!

Hello, you really should consider staying with a student. The admissions office will hook you up with a first year and you wouldn't be imposing at all. I looked at our schedule and it is amazingly clear after the morning of the 3rd. If you don't stay with a student, you can at least have one show you around. If you were really bored, you could even come to class with us :) One interesting way to kill afternoon, is to walk through the sky walk. There is this glass enclosed sky walk that covers nearly all of downtown. Then there is this quaint little area in West Des Moines with small shops called Valley Junction. The capital building is always interesting, the roof is done entirely in gold leaf. I imagine Becky Grissom or Melinda from admissions could give you more hints. As for the hotel thing, well you know my first advice but you could also look in to the chain places like the Best Western, there is one of those about 2 miles from campus? I would agree that it is much cheaper to fly into Omaha or KC. From Omaha, you would just have to get on I-80 and head east, you would hit Des Moines in about 2 1/2 hours. I hope this helps a bit.

Katie

Hey Katie! Thanks for all your help. I actually just got the interview package in the mail and I saw the names of a few people who are willing to host a student. I will probably look into it. I'm glad to hear that you think it wouldn't be an imposition. I was afraid of that. Any more advice would be great form anyone out there, esp DMU students....thanks everyone!!!

nvrgvup,

i don't know if this is your first interview or not, but i just wanted to let you know that dmu was probably my most relaxed interview ever. it was my first, so i was nervous, but they really put me at ease. it was an open interview-they had read my application and basically asked me questions about it. good luck to you!

Hey guys!
I have an interview at DMU on April 12th. Any additional hints? I am flying in a day earlier and staying with a student host. I have heard a lot of great things about the school and I am very excited about my interview.
Anybody out there that I will be seeing on the 12th?
Good luck to everyone!

Hey interviewees, just wanted you to hear from a soon-to-be grad. I'm outta here in less than two months and couldn't be happier with my DMU education and experience as a whole. If you have questions before or after your interview, feel free to send me a private message and I'll get back to you. Best wishes with your interviews!
