DMU is trying some new add campaigns to accurately reflect the school... pick your favorite!

1. DMU: increasing success by lowering expectations!
2. DMU: There is no greater joy than soaring high on the wings of your dreams, except maybe the joy of watching a dreamer who has nowhere to land but in the oceans of reality.
3. DMU: There are no stupid questions, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots.
4. DMU: When you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do!
5. DMU: the secret to success is knowing who to blame for your failures.
6. DMU: The only consistent feature of all your dissatisfying relationships is you.
7. DMU: Never be afraid to share your dreams with the world, because there's nothing the world loves more than the taste of really sweet dreams.

I really love them all, but I think the most accurate are #3 and #7. Feel free to add your own too!

If you feel you are unfairly competing in a special olympics event then transfer. If you have been told you can obtain your dreams and now you dont think you can...well to bad. Welcome to life.

Hey DMU student - are you trashing DMU or just relating a personal experience? If you think your school has problems that no other school has, then it just the old grass being greener thing. I thought DMU had a few problems until I talked to other students at conferences and then thanked my lucky stars I was in Des Moines.

DMUstudent, does this mean that you are not going to donate money to the school after you graduate?

My advice to you, do what I did, take your prozac and thorazine religiously!

Also, first thing in the morning, stand in front of the mirror and repeat to yourself "I'm OK, people like me, and gosh-darn-it I'm fun to be with!"

macman,
I am very anxious to see how you feel about DMU about 2 years from now.

Actually, I thought he was just making light of the situation with those slogans... not really trashing the school..

I interviewed at DMU and was ready to go their before being accepted to my state allopathic school. I didn't think it was so bad (accept for the cafeteria food). The faculty seemed pretty nice/dean graduated from Harvard. What exactly is wrong with the place? A lot of the ivy league allopathic schools just stick you in the library and tell you to learn it all yourself anyway. Look on the bright side you will be a physician making over a 150,000 a year. Podiatrist can't even get jobs now and all they can do is look at feet.

who is this clown?? i really doubt that DMUstudent is even a DMU student. Signed on SDN only to put his/her list of negative slogans.. <img border="0" alt="[Pity]" title="" src="graemlins/pity.gif" />

Raptor, where in the world did you pull that comment about podiatrists? i'll forewarn you that you're going to get **** for that. You shouldn't say things like that unprovoked.

I have to say, I have been on this site for about a week now. I have seen far more negative postings than positive about DMU here. I have also seen more negative postings about DMU than any other school.

I was accepted into DMU and after my visit there it immediately became my #1 choice. I was very excited. Then I came here and now I am feeling very apprehensive. Part of me is now wishing I didnt join this site and another part is wondering if I shouldnt have turned down the other schools.

The negative stuff needs to be aired because it is important to know the reality of the situation. However, are there no positive things about DMU? Is it really that bad? Will my education and experience there be inferior? This has become my concern.....

DMU strengths: OMM, FP, IM
DMU weaknesses: Surgery and anything specialty

jsdmu - I am a little confused by your post. Are you refering to rotations or do you mean classwork the first two years?

Migraine.... didn't really want to get into it too much but oh well.... here it goes.
I think that DMU does an adequate job in preparing students who desire to enter the fields of FP and IM. I also think that the OMM taught at DMU is very good... do I plan on using it... depends what I end up doing really. I also wish that DMU would give us more than two weeks to study for boards.
I think that DMU's rotation set-up leaves A LOT to be desired. Yes, some will argue against this, but thats my opinion.
Am I happy at DMU??? I'll let you know in two years when I get my match results back!

Jsdmu - ok, I understand a little better now. I agree that DMU's clinical rotation set-up needs some fine-tuning, but there is a silver lining. Because part of your third year and the majority of your fourth year is wide open, you can rotate at some great places if you don't mind doing the leg work yourself. I have been in Colorado on rotation for the past 5 months and it has been great. Yeah, it sucks that you are paying big $$$ to do most of the work yourself, but oh well...
As far as preparing us to enter various fields, I think you'll find over the course of the next two years that you are adequately prepared for just about any field. DMU could do a better job with OB, Peds, Gen. Surg, and Ortho the second year, but you would forget most of it anyways. Just read during those rotations (well, try to read during all rotations...at least a little) and you'll be up to speed in no time.
Don't get me wrong...I have plenty of gripes about DMU. But now that graduation is around the corner, I really don't feel behind the curve like I thought I would.
And for boards, pick up First Aid, BRS Pathology, and review your bugs and drugs (I liked Micro rediculously simple and Lippincott's Pharm) and you'll do fine. Two years of Boesler will have you more than ready for OMM, and there really isn't any anatomy, histology and very little biochem. Do some studying now so you won't be freaking out during those two weeks (trust me).

CUBuffsgrad98- I'm not affiliated with DMU in any way (I'm actually a COMP student right now), but I wanted to mention that this effect of coming onto the SDN website and seeing negative comments here and there.. it definitely happens and not just to DMU, but to other schools as well. I know it certainly has happened to COMP, but I think often times, it only takes negative comments by a few students (which may be legitimate) to make the situation seem ominous because the sampling of students commenting on these schools is very small when you are looking at message boards online. No school will have classes where absolutely all the students ended up being a great match with the school and everyone was happy being there.. there will always be a mix of students. I respect legitimate comments about schools because I think it is wise to inform prospective applicants/students on what a school is like before they put the time/effort/money into applications and interviews. Medical school is a huge step in life and everyone certainly deserves a fair chance to figure out which school is best for them (although their decision may not always be accurate). All schools have positives as well as negatives although they may not be explicitly stated, but being a good fit for the school is probably just as important as it will dictate how you life will be for the next couple of years as well as influence your future career. That is certainly something to spend time considering.

All this being said, if your gut feeling during the interviews and visit to DMU made you feel good about the school, I'd think that you probably were exposed to more students, faculty, and the school in general than the exposure here on SDN. Don't get me wrong, the DMU regulars on here are great and I think "generally", people try to be very supportive on SDN. Try to take comments with a grain of salt and personally, I'd relax a little bit.. you're IN! (medical school that is!) :D

thanks melancholy, thats good advice. I have definately started to feel better about things, especially since a few people emailed me directly about my concerns. Thanks to those people!

Hey there CU I am from Denver and plan on going to DMU. I interviewed at other schools and have made my decision to go to DMU based on my interview and chats with undergrad friends that are there now, not based on SDN praise or slamming. Hope to see you next year.

3mc1dj,
