Everyone matches somewhere, even FMGs. Matching at your top choices is a different situation.

how exactly is this read, for example:

Anesthesia:
Albert Einstein, NYC (6)
Johns Hopkins- Baltimore, MD

Does that mean 6 spots were matched for DO's from NYCOM at Albert Einstein and one was filled at Johns Hopkins?...

Where did you read it?

it sounds like 6 at Albert E and 1 at JHU. There is a number of DOs doing anesthesia at JH. 🙂

Yes.

The 6 at Albert E are not necessarily from NYCOM. Albert E is at NYC.

I think he got it off the NYCOM Matchlist though.

yea, i got it off the NYCOM matchlist...

so the 6 at Albert Einstein in the city arent necessarily all from NYCOM?? why would it be on the NYCOM matchlist then..thats confusing me?

Never mind!

If it is on NYCOM's match list then it pertains only to NYCOM DOs

Assuming you want to match into an osteopathic field, you're all set if you choose DO school. However, if you want to match into an allopathic field, your chances drop by 20%, which is about 10% better than if you had graduated from a foreign school. Of course there are many osteopathic "fields" that are identical to the allopathic (i.e. radiology), but nevertheless, some become less attracted to the DO profession because of fear of not getting what is considered a more competitive residency.

I'm not trying to start another MD vs DO thread, I'm just stating facts as they are. Don't believe me??... then check this out:

Please enlighten us as to what you consider an osteopathic vs. allopathic field 🙄

Osteopathic Field = Via Osteopathic Match
Allopathic Field = Via Allopathic Match

Most specialties are the same, except you have OMM in Osteopathic match, and some fields do not exist under osteopathic match.. i.e. neurosurgery (since the last time I checked at least).

1. OMM isn't found in most AOA non primary care specialties
2. There are AOA neurosurgery fellowships (another opening soon in Washington).

Ill give you credit for knowing some things here. You knew that DOs have their own residencies, which is more than I can say for most premeds I have come into contact with. However, your assumption that there are no DO residencies for Neurosurgery is wrong. DO's have osteopathic residencies for almost every field. And OMM is not used outside of primary care.

1- I'm not a "pre"-med (look at my signature)

2- I am a DO advocate- in fact I got accepted to 5 DO schools (top choice was Nova btw) , but chose MD b/c well- something I just can't express in words.. but I'm sure you can figure out.

3- Notice how in my post I said no Neurosurgery residencies since I checked last.. which was a while ago.. or maybe I just missed the fact that there were any. I just said Neurosurgery because I was procrastinating from studying for Neuroanatomy (which is what I'm doing now btw), and that was on the top of my mind.

4- I have no idea what you mean by "OMM" is not used outside primary care, because I know for a 100% fact that there are PURE OMM residencies out there, although not many DO grads choose them. In fact- look at the yellow pages- those OMM DO's advertise themselves as such.

5- Also notice how you proved my original point by saying, "DO's have osteopathic residencies for almost every field".

Once again- not trying to start anything--- just trying to dish out the facts for all you pre-DO's.

Sorry, didn't read your signature. I honestly didn't want to piss you off, I saw misinformation posted by you with regards to the Neurosurgery residencies, and my main objective was to correct that. Sorry if you were offended. Congrats on your success with the med school process.

Even if you don't initially match as a DO there are still allopathic (or osteopathic) spots available that you can scramble into. Everyone will eventually end up in a residency somewhere.
