I am mildly paranoid and I hesitate sometimes to post topics up here as with a few clicks and some deductive reasoning an ad com official or something might be able to figure out who I am. Is it true alot of med school faculty members read this? Just wondering.....

My mom freaked when I posted my pic in the picture thread (she actually reads these boards a lot, freaky). She was sure they were all going to find out who I was and then start figuring out what I said about each school...

I for one, believe they have better things to do with their time than stalk me... and if they are trying to figure out who I am, hopefully it's because I said something that would get me in.

On several interviews, A.D.s would talk about comments made in the forums. They stated that more than anything else , they wanted to see what the perception of the programs are. Don't be intimidated though. The process is hard on them to.

ADCOM and LizzyM are regular posters and med school faculty, and there are a number of other med students who occasionally post who have been in admissions (BigRedZippo). The key to not being recognized is just don't be that specific about yourself. Or, and this is better, don't post anything you wouldn't mind them reading.

I think it would allow them to see a more personal side of you that isn't visible in an interview or on your application. I'm sure for some people that would be a bad thing, but for others, it would be a great thing.

Here is my philosophy on the topic:

Don't say anything you wouldn't say in person. Nothing I post is out of character for me, thus when linked to me, I could defend anything I said without hesitation.

None of what I've written about myself since registering is true.

Or is it?

Does anyone know what schools these adcom members are affiliated with?

With all respect, I wouldn't tell you if I knew. These folks are a resouce here. If we knew who they were, they'd instantly be snowed with pre-meds begging for help. They'd have to stop posting. Anonymity allows them to help us on their terms.

👍

I may disagree with Lizzy at times, but she's one of the most helpful posters here. Don't spoil the magic by pestering the magician.

Plus, you don't know.

The Dean of Admissions at the Miller School of Medicine (Miami) posted last year. Dr. Hinckley was really very helpful and forthright.

I wouldn't be surprised. I called UCDavis the other day, spoke to Terri and asked a question about something, said - "yeah, I was just wondering since, well, you know how SDN gets..." and she started cracking up and replied, "Yeah, that place can be a rumor mill. I know how it is." So they're familiar with it, for sure.

My school found out who I am. So I bet every school has someone that frequents SDN.

i saw a staffer at an admissions office reading sdn when i was there for an interview!

crazy! I'm in "stealth mode" now, I was pretty easy to figure out before... not too much better now, if you know me 😎

Gee, I hope not too many of them read this 😀 Oh well, hopefully the fact that I've made it a point to only insult schools I won't attend will mean the other schools won't hold it against me.

I would not be surprised if anyone in the ADCOM office knew who I was on SDN, let alone recognize me in person. It's kinda hard when everyone travels in the same circles.

Be careful of what you post on SDN if there are people out there who know you and your username. That's all I'll say for now.

It's good to be a little paranoid about these things. Assume that adcoms read SDN just to be safe, although they probably don't (they have lives, really!). Realize that anything you post is now public. For example, people have been fired from jobs for what they wrote in blogs. You just need to not say things that indicate who you are. So, don't say, "I interviewed at Mayo Clinic on February 10th." You can just say that you interviewed at a school and be ambiguous about dates. Also, don't put your name in your userid, don't put your school in your profile, etc.

Now that I think about it, I would guess that adcom's do use SDN and search on their own school name to see what students are saying / posting. So, if you post and say the specific day that you interviewed and/or have unique information in your profile, that would be obvious to them. They may not be hunting to find people, but it would be human nature for an adcom staffer to try to figure someone out if they slam the school, just out of curiousity.

yeah, when i was at my rosalind franklin interview one of the admissions officers was reading these forums in plain view of all of the applicants waiting for their interviews.
