Hi All,

I will be applying this cycle very soon and feel a little anxious about where I stand. I will be applying to MD and DO so I would like to know if I have a shot. I am a NY resident
GPA: 3.77
sGPA: 3.56
MCAT: 508 (127/126/126/129)
So that’s where I stand academically which is mediocre according to my premed advisor.

Now for extracurricular;

Shadowing: Shadowed and ophthalmologist for 80 hours with a strong letter of recommendation.

Volunteering: Volunteered at 2 hospitals for a total of 150 hours. Helped out at a local food pantry as well, 50 hours.

Leadership: I was president of my pre-medical club and was able to have many medical schools come in to speak to the club.

Clinical: Currently a physical therapy aide and worked as a medical assistant for 1 years. Been a physical therapy aide for 3 years now. The work environment has helped with patient interaction and how to do deal with the many personalities that come with being a medical practitioner.

Research: Have a volunteer lined up but that will be after I apply.

I have been having a tough time building a school list as I don’t feel confident that I would get into a program due to my premed advisor. That’s why I’ve come here during my dark times.

You are overly pessimistic. I suggest these schools with your stats:
All 4 SUNYs
Albany
New York Medical College
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Seton Hall
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
George Washington
Georgetown
Virginia Commonwealth
Eastern Virginia
NOVA MD
TCU-UNT
Creighton
St. Louis
Loyola
Rosalind Franklin
Rush
Medical College Wisconsin
Oakland Beaumont
Also apply broadly to DO schools and you are competitive for all DO schools:
NYITCOM
UNECOM
PCOM (all schools)
LECOM (all schools)
MU-COM
DMU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
KCU-COM
AZCOM
CUSOM
VCOM (all schools)
Apply in June and submit all your secondaries by July.

As leader of your prehealth club who has invited admissions recruiters to campus, what feedback did you get from any of them regarding your application and areas for improvement? I only have a small issue with all your 80 shadowing hours being with an ophthalmologist, but I think you have covered some of your bases in primary care elsewhere. But that depends on what else you did.

I was a medical assistant for a pain management physician as well. For my shadowing, I was able to observe surgeries ranging from cataracts, retinas, and oculoplastics. Most admission recruiters said I was a good applicant, but my advisor spooked me.

I suggest building up the nonclinical volunteering (almost all of your volunteering is clinical and many of the schools here are service loving.

Any DO program. I can't recommend Nova, Wm Carey, BCOM, ICOM and LUCOM, for different reasons. MSUCOM? Read up on Larry Nasser and you decide. LMU has an accreditation warning, which concerns me. CalHS is too new and appears to be too limited in rotations sites. UIW refuses to post their Boards scores, which is fishy.
