Just a quick question: How do Doctors (MD) view Dentists? Do they look down on them or do they just pretty much ignore them. Also, this may sound silly, but do Doctors go to the Dentist?

A dentist is just a surgeon for the teeth. We love dentists because they help prevent halitosis in our patients. Plus they train with us on the same campus and sometimes in the same classrooms.

Most physicians I know usually take care of their teeth better than the average person.

All doctors absolutely hate all dentists. It's been an ongoing rivalry for hundreds of years, and every 23.4392 years they take it out to the battlefield, dentists armed with drills while doctors are armed with scalpels. Usually the dentists get slaughtered, but not before the dentists damage most of the doctors teeth, hence why doctors have such crappy teeth, much like the British and their ongoing wars with dentists.

You're kidding right? Once you're a doctor you're above everyone else... and thus are immune to all the diseases that affect "normal" people.

Well, dentists are not medical doctors. And so, if a dentist starts talking about medicine, doctors will not care much of what they say. Now, if they talk about teeth, well that's their specialty. I'm not sure if that's what you're getting at. I would say that dentistry is less prestigious than medicine, but it pays very well these days.

This is somewhat true...however, it is known that a number of dentists who specialize in oral surgery tend to do some sort of fellowship or part of their training with ENTs i believe. Albiet, they are certified as a DDS, they do get some medical training at times.

In the end, does it necessarily matter?

I love dentists. In fact, I've slept with several. And my dentist loves me.

What are you going for in this post?

Some doctors show dentists no respect. Others do.
Some dentists think doctors are arrogant or condescending when speaking to dentists. Some are; some are not.

Most of the premeds I know have little idea what dentistry is. Most of the dentists I know have a good idea what medical school is like. The only thing I think many dentists I know (and I socialize with a number of dentists, if you couldn't tell from the first statement of this post) tend to forget is that MDs end up spending an additional 3 years of 80hrs/wk training after graduation.

I haven't had any bad experiences. Mutual respect so far (I'm a dent student). My school has several classes, labs & tests taken together b/w the meds and dents. So the meds can appreciate that yes, we have to go thru extensive training as well, plus they learn more about some of the inter-relationships between the oral cavity and the rest of the body.
Meds frequently forget that over 50% of dents spend an additional year of residency training after graduation (general dental residencies), while another 35% or so spend between 3 to 6 years in a residency program (yes, a good percentage of which require 80hrs/wk as well).
I'm not sure if this answers your question...dent has its advantages and disadvantages, and so does medicine. Everyone seems to respect each other for their expertise in their particular field. And yes dentists do have to go see dentists and other doctors as well! In terms of sleeping with them, can't comment. But from my experience I would suggest nursing students over med students:)

what do you call a doctor that failed out of med school?

a dentist

Dental school is 4 years long, just like med school.

Dental students learn the basic sciences such as gross anatomy, biochemistry, immunology, pharmacology, etc. just like med students.

After dental school, many dental students go into general residency for an additional 1-2 years or specialty residency for an additional 2-6 years. Wow, that sounds a lot like what med students do.

The funny thing is that if dentistry were taught as a subspecialty in medical school, med school students would be fighting and clawing to become "specialists of the oral cavity" as they would undoubtedly call themselves, especially with the great quality of life dentistry provides. As it is, med students are fighting and clawing to land dermatology residencies so they can then pop zits and drain boils for a living.

Nice. As Colbert would say "Nailed!"
