Talked to one of my good friends who is the chief cardiology fellow at a good southern academic program.

He confided in me that the program coordinator screens applications and many arenot even seen by him or the program director.

When I asked her qualifications, he said she has a bachelors degree.

This made me wonder.

Should program Coordinators have this much power to decide who becomes cardiologist?

Are programs that busy that they rely so much on Coordinators with no medical background to select cardiologists?

What do you guys think?

IMHO, the PC is just going by the parameters given to him/her by the FD - e.g screen for CRs, reject anyone with Step score below 200, any F on transcripts, reject anyone without research etc.

This. PCs don't make the rules, they're just running the ERAS filters decided on by the program leadership.
