Do I have a chance of getting into Dental School if I applied to Medical School?? Medical school was really a dream more for my parents than mine -- to be honest. I have a close friend who is a dentist and I have spent much time with him and find the profession interesting and fullfilling. Who has been in this situatino before and how have you over-come it? Thank you.

I converted from premed to predent.
I hope your parents are rational people.
Call UOP. Ask them to talk with your parents.
Seriously, they can give so much statistics that can convince you that dentistry and UOP is the way to go.

Evidence:
Retiring dentists over-number dental graduates.
Decrease supply.

Shortage
Limited supply.

I doubt I need to say about the demand side.

Simple econ theory points that dentistry is the way to go.

____________

So, are you applying to med sch now? Did you get accepted?
I hope you didn't cos some adcom will tackle you really hard on that. At least one of the interviewers was giving me a hard time on my decision to switch from premed to predent.

____________

As for your parents, explain to them that name/prestige aint everything. MDs are restricted by HMO/insurance/their own department head. Dentists are still free!!!

Anyway, talk with them.

____________

Question concerning you.
I hope your reason to change is better than having your best/closest friend being a dentist. Cos I know quite a few amount of physicians, pharmacists, and etc who are my friends. What I am trying to say is being friends with Shaq doesnt make me want to become a professional basketball player. You have to find solid reasons to put yourself through dental school.

Btw, I want to know Shaq but I dont.

I did apply this year to med and to be honest...its a relief i have only had waitlists...but i dont' want to go....i actually enjoy the practice of dentistry because it is like how "past medicine" was where you can actually spend time with your patient.

Now, can I apply to schools of dentistry next year if I applied to their school of medicine this year. UGH

To answer your question--YES you definitely have a chance of getting into Dental school. Some schools may ask if you've applied to Med school as well, but most probably won't. And if they do, just be honest. Just be sure to live your own dreams and not your parents. Good luck to you!

It should be no problem at all. Just make your switch to dentistry a positive thing and don't try to hide it. Adcomms understand this. I would guess at least 50% of dental students started out pre-med at one time. Just give good and true reasons as to why you want to switch and you should have no problem getting in. Good luck.

Not unless he goes to a six-year residency. There are *plenty* of 4-year residencies where the training is identical, they just don't spend two years rotating through wards.

I'll be the first to tell you that it's possible. I applied to med school last year, realized it was a mistake and shifted my focus onto dentistry. I'm living proof it can be done. I will say I was quite skeptical..... but it didn't seem to be a big deal. However, I was asked why the switch from med to dent in both my interviews.

Where can someone get more information on denistry? Like schools, costs, average stats, etc. See I have wanted to do medicine for the longest of times, then one day I got to thinking. Do I really want to do this? Maybe not, maybe this isn't for me. I am sure I want to stay in healthcare, but felt to truly access my current situation, I should look into everything, especially before I take the MCAT or whatever test may await. So where can I go to get some good info?

PS ~ I talked to my advisor at school to get some information and he tried to talk me out of it!! I haven't talked to my pre-med counselor yet because he heads an Honors Med. Program I am in which gives me guaranteed acceptance into med school. I can hardly believe he would be supportive of this mid-mid-life crisis. Peace
