My GPA is really low (2.25). I have already graduated and majored in Biology @ UMD. My PCAT scores are pretty good though, I scored in the 91st percentile overall. Also, I have a ton of experience in pharmacy doing retail, regulatory, clinical trials, etc. and have letters of reference from all the "right" pharmacists. I want to get into UMD pharmacy for Fall '06. Do I have any chance of getting in at all???

hello rxwannabe,

I encourage you to stay positive for you never can tell. I bet you Pharmacy student recruiters these days look way beyond the GPA. If you have tons of experience that will speak out for ya. Stay positive and pray harder. Get me straight, GPA is also a major determinant but then the admission process covers a wide range of stuffs. Stay positive and hange in tight. Merry Xmas in arrears.

GPA is only one thing that they look at in the admissions process. There are plenty of people that have been accepted to pharmacy school with a low GPA but stellar PCAT/experience etc.

Good luck!

I recommend retaking some core classses you did horrible in to raise your GPA. It will show admissions that you're motivated and capable of doing well academically.

A lot of schools have a GPA minimum. It is usually around 2.5. So you may want to retake a few classes and at least get it to the minimum. If you do that you may have a good chance, since you attributes are good.

If you want to go to Maryland, like the previous poster said, you must improve your GPA. They will not interview you if you do not at least meet the minimum 2.5 GPA.

I agree...you should try to bring the GPA up. Also, based on your PCAT scores and experience, it seems as though you can handle the work. Is there a reason for the low GPA? I only ask because it's important that you do a self-evaluation and look at study habits and your way of life that contributed to your lower GPA. Many pharm schools have a minimum GPA of 2.3 just to remain in the program and the work is harder than undergraduate school. So bring the GPA if you can, but also make sure you have an idea of why it was low to begin with, so that you don't make the same mistakes again.

But, if you can afford to apply, then by all means, apply and see what shakes loose.

i don't know about the particular school you are applying to but honestly i wouldn't bother right now.

your GPA is not what most publish as their min. and even those who have what they publish as their min rarely are accepted.

Retake the classes you need to retake and apply somewhere that accepts the higher of the two grades (if there are schools that do that)

In another thread someone mentioned that they had a 1.8 and a 99% and were still accepted.... I know that person's GPA was not 1.8 when they applied to pharmacy school.

Like it or not initially schools will look at your pcat and GPA to determine whether or not they will offer you an interview. And I believe with pharmcas schools can automatically not even see applications below a certain GPA or PCAT
