i'm a DO student who is planning on applying to solely ACGME programs. I've already released my USMLE scores but I don't know if i have to release my COMLEX scores. I actually went down on my COMLEX from step 1 to step 2 so if possible I'd prefer not to release it.

anyone know if its ok to withhold them without penalty? thanks.

The easy answer: No, you don't. There's no rule that requires that you release your COMLEX scores.

The hard answer: Maybe you do. Although there is no rule that you do so, some residency programs may be looking for them. It's possible that they will review only "complete" applications, which might include COMLEX scores. Each program gets to decide what "complete" means to them.

As a follow up how important are the COMLEX scores? I am in the same boat where I went down from COMLEX 1 to 2 but went up from USMLE 1 to 2. All scores were above average though
