Does anyone knonw what happens if a DO matches to an allopathic residency in Pennsylvania or the other 4 states and does not get their first year approved by the AOA to count as an "internship"? Are they only restricted from moonlighting during the residency?

If you do not get your internship approved, you can finish the residency - but you will not be able to get your unrestricted license. Therefore you will not be able to moonlight, obtain a fellowship in those states, nor practice there after residency is over.

Can't you petition the AOA to get around that somehow? I live in Michigan(one of the other 4 states) and will possibly be facing that as well in the future.

Your application for recognition of the ACGME PG1 year has to be approved. The OPs question was in regards to a denied application.

Sorry, I misread the original post. To the OP, was your application denied, or are you just speculating on what would happen if it was denied?
