Do med schools know the acceptance status of their waitlisted applicants?

I know that med school would know whether their accepted students have other acceptances after may 15th; i was just wondering if this also holds true for their waitlisted candidates. I think i heard from somewhere that they wouldn't know whether you have been accepted somewhere else unless they accept you first. can anyone verify this?
