Anyone know if they contact the people that you put down on your Work/Activies list? One of my contacts is dead, and another one I didn't leave on good terms... should these not be put down then ? Also how would you enter tutoring? Who is your contact or supervisor there ?

From what I've heard...no. You don't give an email or phone or anything, and quite frankly, it's too much work for some med schools to download your entire app, do you think they're going to search for your contacts? However, if you volunteered at University of Mozambique for 2 years and put Dr. Hotstuff as your contact, and now you're applying to U of Mozambique and some prof on the adcom knows Dr. Hotstuff he might just ask him about you. Or you apply to a completely different institution but your interviewer went to med school with one of your contacts so he gives him a call. Sounds far-fetched but it's a small world! Bottom line - don't worry about it but don't lie on your app.

Basically agree with this, but would add that they certainly have the right to call folks, and so if something looks funny, they may check it out as well.

Hi there,
Some schools screen and some do not. If a supervisor is deceased, you can indicate it on your application. I would list everything, good or bad. Most people when contacted, are reluctant to give a bad reference. They might not speak of you in glowing terms but they can suffer serious consequences if they slander you. If you were a tutor outside of a specific program you should list it but put yourself as the contact.

The problems often come when people list things that they never did. When we contact a place and they never heard of you, then your whole application comes under suspicion.

njbmd 🙂
