I have heard conflicting views on this. Some people regard Baylor and UTSW as "better" than the other schools in Texas, (which are all very solid institutions as well)

To everyone not located within Texas, are you aware of any differences between the Texas medical schools?

Do any of them stand out for any specific reason?

As an outsider, I have always thought that Baylor and UTSW are the better Texas schools. Baylor particularly stands out because they have the name recognition and admits out of states.

i always think of texas as another country... Bush country to be exact...and same with Cali. I've just heard of Rice/Baylor. but i do know it's a good thing to be a state resident of TX for the process.

Is your opinion because of the USNEWS rankings, or because you actually are aware of these schools?

I'm not attacking you, I am just trying to get a sense of whether or not people know anything about the schools or they just pay attention to the rankings.

Thanks for your reply.

JDAD-

As an outsider who is more than elated to be matriculating at UTHSCSA this summer, my experience as a grad student is that UTSW and Baylor are known for great basic/clinical research. That's a big factor in ranking and recognition.

If anything, outsiders often can ONLY name those two schools in TX 🙁

Why would you care what people outside Texas think?

Answer: Because I might want to go outside Texas for residency.

Response: Now why would you want to go and do a thing like that?

Because there is a bigger world out there and it does someone good to get out of town once and a while. Thus, I am leaving Massachusetts for Texas. God help my liberal ass.

I think so, BUT these ppl probably are physicians/researchers with interests in particular fields that the schools are strong in.

For example, I'm sure obstetricians and gynecologists know UTSW for their ob/gyn department...I hear they get the most OB patients in the country
Likewise, pediatricians recognize Baylor for their peds department, opthamoligsts for Baylor's optho department, cardiologists for Baylor's cardiatric fellowships, etc...

As much as I like TX, and the quality/cheap education, I don't think I am going to stick around for residency unless I can stay in Ausitn

I think you will probably survive San Antonio. I think it was one of the few areas of Texas that wasn't like 70% Bush voters in the election.

No, not becasue of USNEWS. Baylor is a well known university outside of Texas, especially since they play Nebraska every year in football and lose badly. Some also contend that it is the "harvard of the south", but i don't know how true that is.

UTSW, I know a lot of medical students and quite a few of them are applying there for various residencies right now. Most praise them for the clinical training that the school provides.

Baylor College of medicine is not affiliated with Baylor University (in Waco).

Haha, didn't know that. Strange that they have the same name. In any case, do they have the same mascot? Well, I guess by affiliation, I THOUGHT that Baylor COM is a great school. And it turns out to be true. I have several friends applying there too.

yeah, and Rice is the Harvard of the south punk! (I mean Harvard is the Rice of the North!) 😀 j/k Anyhow, lulu is correct, the schools are no longer affiliated.

Really? I thought it would be Duke or Vanderbilt or Emory. Rice is awesome too though!

On the Baylor thing, I joke with my roommate that if they renamed the school after a huge donor (an auction perhaps?) that they would instantly double their application pool since people wouldn't think the school was located in Wacko.

(A little more direct question to those not from Texas) have you heard of all of these schools and do you have any thoughts about their programs: UT-San Antonio, UTMB, UT Southwestern, UT Houston, A&M ?

I live in Texas, and I know this was directed to people outside of the state...but it seems most people only know about UTSW and Baylor. But anyway....I interviewed at all of the Texas schools...and for the most part, they're pretty similar. A&M and Texas Tech have split campuses....many of the schools are reworking their curriculums....you'll just have to do a little bit of research online and decide where you would feel the most comfortable living. I think that they are all great schools, and your decision should be based on where you think you can stand to spend 4 years...not so much on the name or rankings. And in response to a few previous comments....believe it or not....not everyone in Texas is a Bush supporter...and us liberals aren't run out of town...at least not frequently. 😛 AND…I attend BU in Waco…and a lot of the controversy associated with Waco didn’t even happen in Waco….it happened in little small towns surrounding the city. It’s not that bad.

Bump, any other opinions?

Well, I like UTSW because they have amazing research opportunities. I have to admit, though, I didn't know of them before I looked into USNews rankings. I'm from California, but am a grad student in NY. But after much research, I'm really impressed. In fact, I not only think they are really great right now, but I think they have the highest potential to become competitive with those top tens. When I interviewed, I showed up a day early and went on rounds with a couple of applicants, med students, and residents. I was very impressed with Parkland Hospital. We saw so much variety and diversity in the patients that I really believe it's a first class clinical training ground. Also, the faculty are top-notch. I am not a huge fan of the A-B-C-D grading system, but whatever. That's all for now!

As an outside of Texas person, I would have to concur: People outside of Texas are only aware of these schools and form their opinions of reputation more based on NCAA rankings than US News rankings. Sad but true...

yeah i've heard of texas tech cuz the demolished nebraska this year...holla!

I know virtually nothing about any Texas med school. And the little bit i know has probably been obtained from this board, so yea the more you talk about particular schools here, the more their name will be remembered by me. But i think the only time it really will matter is when matching for residencies so it's more what they think of the schools.

JDAD, did you ever hear from your #1 Texas school...which ever one that was? 😛

I find out monday night. Thanks for asking though.

I hope your grandma is doing better. I have been praying for you and your family.

Why did you take your acceptances off your mdapplicants profile?

thanks so much; no change, so really really bad; it sounds so terrible to say this but she's alive but not living and she'd never want this, so she'd be better off with God

b/c I had so much to update on it and therefore it was somewhat meaningless
