Is it possible to do a DO residency in Internal Medicine, and then say an allopathic (because the DO fellowships are much too far away from home) fellowship in Rheum? Do they apply to each program seperately? How does this work?

Yes, you can do this, but it is program specific (in other words, there are probably some fellowships out there that don't offer spots to osteo IM residents). There's an IM grad from my hospital who is getting ready to start an MD Rheum fellowship this year.

You apply separately to fellowships while you are in residency.

Just be aware that as a DO (AOA) who completes an osteopathic residency and then completes an MD (ACGME) fellowship, there are board certification issues.

You can still gain licensure though.

I always tell people to consider dually accredited programs as well.

There are the best routes to go:

MD Residency --> MD Fellowship
DO Residency --> DO Fellowship
Dually Accredited Residency --> MD Fellowship
Dually Accredited Residency --> DO Fellowship

DO Residency --> MD Fellowship: board certification problems
MD Residency --> DO Fellowship: not an option

DO Residency --> MD Fellowship: board certification problems

Whats the problems? How difficult are they to overcome? And how long will it take to become certified after the residency/fellowship if these problems came up?

Thank you for the help. I'm very interested in this topic and learning as much about it as possible as IM with a fellowship is something I'm strongly considering (Oncology, possibly).

Can be done. We have a cards fellow who did an MD IM residency.

Really?

Now thats something I have never heard of. All of the AOA fellowship programs I have been in contact with will only accept someone who came from an AOA or AOA/ACGME dually accredited program.

Where is this?
