I know this guy, his parents are dentists. He just graduated dental school. The ONLY reason he is a dentist is because his parents are. He doesnt care about the profession because he has it made, working at his dads practice. He gets up in the morning when he pleases, works 4-5 hours a day just cleaning teeth. He even is kind of a slacker, not remembering things, being late, etc. I dont know how he finished dental school in the first place. I sure would not want him working on me with his attitude.

So if lots of applicants parents are dentists, does this look bad? Because the only reason why they want to be dentists is because of their parents??

If I get into dental school im going to be the first doc out of my entire family tree. My parents just graduated highschool in europe. Does this put me in a disadvatage?

As fo me, I did not have my parents support me while going to school.. I had to work while going to a highly competitive school (UOP). When others had mommy and daddy pay for everything. Thus this effected my grades because it took my studying time away from school because I had to work. As for my parents, i'm going to be the first doc in my whole family tree! (if I get in).

I'm just wondering if schools will take my situation and the outlook on this topic into consideration.

anyone have feedback on this?

hahaha. its all about who you know

I know a classmate whose dad is a dentist. The classmate did not get into dental school because of low DAT scores. So a good advice is to get a maximum score for the DAT and you will increase your chance of being admitted at many competitive dental schools. Take a KAPLAN CLASS because you will score very high on the PAT section. The course is $1000. But in my opinion, you can benefit a lot from the class since people have a lot of trouble with Key Holes/ Top-Front-End View etc.

sounds like me. dad is a dentist. low dat scores. high pat score. took the class. i say take the class just to get the study material. also do topscore.

to answer the origonal question. yes i think it does help to have your dad or relative as a dentist although it shouldnt help. just cause someones relative is a dentist doesnt make them one. or even a good candidate for one. the thing it helped me with is getting shadowing and working experience and really knowing the lifestyle and daily life of a dentist.

the short answer is yes it helps but it shouldnt in my opinion (but im glad it does  )

A lot of people have to work through college (I don't think UOP is any harder than other schools). Although that will be a factor that the admissions committee will consider, I don't think they accept it as a reason for getting worse grades.

It's the sad truth and I feel you...

Well. UOP is a hard school especially for science majors. I was struggling to get B's. I had many friends there and NONE of them got A's in pre-req courses such has Anatomy, G-chem, etc..

None of my classmates worked while taking a 16+ unit of science courses. It was impossible.

When I took o-chem at a state school to get transfered I got B+'s in both. At UOP I wouldnt even dreamed of getting higher then a B-. I knew many people taking o-chem there 2+ times cuz they got a bad grade. o-chem teachers at my school are out to get you.

Don't be a hater. Don't worry about what other people's lives are like. It's all about inner peace. I'm gonna go have some ice cream.

Your looking at this all wrong... take the chip of your sholuder about having to work. Working only makes you a stronger and gives you things like a work ethic, which you'll need in anything in this world to succeed. Do the best you can in undergrad and take the DAT, thats all you can really do at this point in the game.

absolutely ....why would they ask if it didn't matter

I think it does help. I know three dentists- all of whom had parents who were also dentists. So pretty much, after graduating, they had the office, the employees, the equipment and the patients. Admissions want to accept the people who are going to be successful dentists, and since these guys have it made, I think its pretty much a shoo in -unless you've got real terrible stats.

Same here. I think 3 people in my family have masters degress, but nope, never a person with the title "Dr." as far back as I can tell. I intend to change that (or at least, I hope to change that).

if your parents are alums or teach at the school you're applying to - heck yes it helps a lot unfortunately.

Didn't want to get too political but I kind of figured I'd mention that Kerry only got into Yale based on his parents too. Ole' Georgie in fact made better grades than Kerry during their days at Yale. Just a little tidbit. 😉

I just wouldn't write your personal statement about how you are from an underprivelged background because there are no other doctors in your family. Alot of us are the first generation in our respective families to go to University let alone become doctors. And those students who's families are paying for their education are a large minority in my experience.

I just wouldn't rely on sympathy playing a big role in getting admitted to dental school.

I have a couple of things say about this post.

First, sure it helps if your parents are dentists. However, I don't think it helps as much as one would hope (or not depending on which side of the fence you are on). It only helps in the sense that an individual who has a parent in the field perhaps has a better understanding of what dentistry takes. On the other hand someone who has done lots of shadowing would have relatively the same understanding. My father is a dentist; however he has NO connections at UF. He did not go to UF and he is no longer very active in the dental community as far as lecturing is concerned.

As far as UOP goes...
I don't want to get into a pissing match with you about whose school is harder and why but I will tell you that unless you are taking classes at ITT tech the classes are going to be about the same. I was curious about where UOP stands on the totem pole and she ranks out at #104 for USnews.com's 2006 list.

Bottom line here. You need to stop making excuses for the difficulty of your classes. We all have it hard and that is just the way science is. To give you and idea: In most of my classes (some were 300+ students) only the top 5-10% in the class get A's and in smaller classes like labs there is ONLY ONE A given. So that means if you have a 98.9 and the guy next to you has a 99. He gets the A and you get the B+. (PS UF us #50 😉 )

This is the only hope you have. Do the best you can in every class, own the DAT and no one will care where you went to school or who your daddy is.
