In general... what do most med students end up doing.

Most medical students live with their professors. I, for one, live with the Dean of my med school. By the way, she is reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally hot,a nine out of nine.

Come to NYC, then you can have the pleasure of living in a dorm for four years. Let me tell you I have 154 square feet of pure luxury!

My school has a mix. A lot of people live alone or with a roommate in an apartment. Some live at home with their parents. Some buy a house with their SO/spouse or rent a house with a couple other classmates.

I think some MS1s will be getting roommates next year, after having a year to get to know people.

I'm heading into MSI at MCV, and I'll be living alone next year. I found a nice little studio near the undergraduate campus.

I don't know anyone who lives alone here. But thats because housing prices are so ridiculously high here.

Most of the people in my class live with roommates, about 10 of them live with husbands/wives/bfs/gfs.

Just remember that if you live with roomates that you guys may not mesh. I am living w/ 2 roomates and I though we would mesh well, but it turns out that they are really messy (leave dropped food in kitchen on floor for weeks etc.) and they are total nerds. I mean most of your med class will be nerds but try and find the clean ones otherwise you'll want to kill yourself^

For those of you living without roomates, does it strain your budget? Here in Charlottesville it is pretty normal for a single apartment to cost $600-700/mo while an apartment with one or two roomates might cost $350-500/mo per person. That could really mean sharing your apartment could put you at one half to two thirds of the rent (at least here), and I can think of lots of things I would rather spend the $150 a month on.

I live alone in a mobile home in the med school parking lot... cuts down on the commute.

I live in the student lounge - no rent, no commute, plenty of people to study with at all hours of the night...

My roommates are really nasty and mean, and are always ganging up on me saying nasty things behind my back and spreading rumors and picking fights with me. I have my USMLE in a few months and it is really annoying.

I'm getting a single tomorrow.

I highly doubt that. Schools dont allow this. If you were trying to be funny...well it wasn't.

However the one about the mobile home...

There was a student in my undergrad who did this. She lived in her car, friends houses, then the library when she sold her car. When the school found out they gave her more financial aid  It took them like three years to notice.

I live alone and away from campus, which looking back was a mistake. I think the best thing is to live alone, but in an area where lots of your classmates live. Or you should rent a house with a few classmates. That way you have a little comaradarie (sp?) and also in-house study partners. That experience is invaluable. Living close to campus also makes it easier to go back & forth during the day

I lived with 6 friends in a big house my first year. They were friends from undergrad and none were in medical school (though one was in law school). I would not recommend such a situation. There was always foosball, Half-Life and Dungeons and Dragons to be played and distract me from studying.

Yes, I've got credit card debt because of it, but to me, it's worth it. The only time I want roommates around is when I want to go out on the weekend, but everyone else is busy. Then at least some people are around. But that only happens occasionally.

I am planning on living alone next year in a 1 bedroom apartment, close to my medical school. As an undergrad I've lived in a four bedroom apartment in a big student housing complex, and after four years od unpredictable roomates I just don't want to worry about it anymore. There will be much more important things to focus on in med school. I'm also getting to the point in life where I just want to have my own little place. I can't wait to move in!

I live with my wife, but if I were single, I would definitely find a roommate. I had roommates in college, and I never felt like I had an issue with privacy. The house just gets too boring and quiet otherwise. Sure, you can get pets, but you have to take care of them, and they cost you extra.

Living alone, with my doggie.
It works well for me, but I'm glad that everyone else lives really close by in their own apartments, so we're all 'around'. Many classmates have roommates, a lot of them didn't know each other before arriving, and I haven't heard anybody sound less than happy about their situation. So, it's a mix. Sometimes I think having a roomie would help me focus & study better. Sometimes I think a roomie could be distracting. Who knows?

Not there yet, but I'd live alone just because I'm too damn neurotic / OCDish to have someone f*ckin' up my ecosystem, man.

I have a roommate, and she studies on campus all the time so she's hardly ever home!

roommate. She drags me out of bed so I'm not late for class. After 4 hours of sleep, my 3 alarms won't work:sleep:

I live alone now after learnign my lesson. I always lived with roommates who were not pre-med in undergad and it worked out but med school students are just a little whacked out. I went through hell living with 2 roommates and then finally moved out and pay twice as much but it is worth it. I would suggest that if you are not sure, jsut try to rent a place for yourself and pay month-to-month if you can and see how it goes. I thought once I get settled in no one will be moving around but people always move so you will have opportunities during the year to move in with someone you think you can get along with. Or another thing that seems to be working out is if people live with rooommates who are not medical students.

Not in med school yet, but I live with my fiance, two kids and our dog. I don't know what I'm going to do when I have to stop working. My fiance makes "decent" money but not enough to pay for everything. I don't think he will be able to anyway. Does FA help out with this problem?

You'll get loans. You'll be massively in debt when you get out - but everyone is.

Your fiances money will have pretty much no effect on your finanicial aid (it may affect free money but thats rare anyway). You will be offered loans up to the full amount of your cost of attendance (living + tuition). Between that and your fiances salary - you'll be fine.
