You take courses about them. But as far as clinics are concerned, your experience will be limited to the prosthesis and possibly the abutment. I don't think any dental school lets you place implants if they have an OMFS or perio department. Schools w/o specialty departments probably don't let you place the implant either.
We take classes and do everything but place the actual implant, I believe.
We treatment plan, take the CBCT if necessary, make the surgical guide, place the restoration, etc. As far as I know, it's a requirement that every student in clinic be assigned an implant case.
