Hey guys,

So I'm an MS1 and there's no form of musical group specific to our med school, other than the standard a cappella stuff. I'm thinking about starting a music outreach group, where volunteers go to nursing homes/clinics and entertain the crowd with some music, etc. I'm not really doing this out of compassion, but rather I just miss my instruments and want to play with a group of people. I think joining the orchestra or even taking private lessons would be too time-intensive, so I'm looking to start a group with other med students who have the same time-constraints that I have.

Do you have any other ideas? Do musical groups exist on your med school campus?

My school has one where we can perform in nursing homes. We can also teach young ones how to play piano, guitar, flute, etc.

We have a jazz band, but they don't perform for nursing homes or the like that I'm aware of. They do perform for fellow med students though.

We also have an annual variety fest which is open for anyone to play a song or two. There's also an art portion.

And of course, we have an organization that hits up local shows.

Dalhousie Univ. (Canada) has a very active musical-enrichment program. http://www.musicinmedicine.com/ I believe it was started by one of the professors, Dr. Ron Stewart, because he felt that medical students' stress levels, etc. benefited notably (pun somewhat intended) from participation in music.

At our school people have begun putting on an annual musical in the spring. Casting happened just recently, I think, and practices are Saturday mornings for a few hours this semester. Things pick up as the show gets closer, but it happens during an easier block for everybody so there's a little more time to go around.
