DOCTOR (personal fulfillment, philanthropism, prestige, as well as blood, sweat and tears)

    vs.

ROCK STAR (babes, Porsches, drugs, fans, orgies, and possiblility of OD)?

What exactly is the question you're asking?

SORRY FOR MY LACK OF CLARITY, BUT VOTE ON WHETHER U WOULD BE A DOC OR ROCK STAR IF YOU HAD THE CHOICE.

Thanks for the clarification. I must point out, however, that with this being a pre-medical forum...I think you'll have a bias toward the M.D. side!!

Well, not exactly. Some people choose MD because it a more realistic career option than say a rock star or President. I on the other hand, would love to be a physician, and pass up rock stardom for it.

If I wanted to be a rock star, I'd be posting on a pre-rock star forum.

I wouldn't say being a physician is more attainable. Tons of rock stars couldn't hack medicine. Tons of physicians couldn't hack the rock industry. Conversely, I'm sure there are people in both fields who could switch over.

And who wants drugs anyway? Drugs are bad...n'kay. :)

By the way, praying4MD, I have those song clips up if you want me to send you a few. Let me know, because we'll have to set it up through mIRC (or a website - too large for email).

A few of us can do the weezer thing and defer for a year, make a few million, then go back to school for a year or so, then leave again and make a few million more.

    LETS DO IT!

While I wasn't a "rock star", I did manage to get a record deal before applying to medical school. So my vote is to do both.

Deniz Tek from Radio Birdman (seminal band from the late 70's) did both.

I'm a drummer, and for a little while I actually considered trying to pursue a career as a musician instead of a doctor. Sometimes I think I'd still like to. I have to find time for both, but with my 2 year old daughter that's kinda difficult. Right now I have my red Tama drumset set up in the kitchen of my 1 bedroom apartment.

Are you lucky enough to live in a complex full of deaf people? I used to have a beautiful gun metal grey Tama set, but had to sell it when I moved into an apartment.

Do you practice with brushes or those bamboo sticks? Please let me know how you manage to still play.

My apartment isn't in an apartment building; it's attached to my landlord's garage. Still, my drums are very loud outside if I really play with regular sticks, so I usually use Hot Rods (I think that's the name). I have brushes too, but it's harder to play classic rock music with brushes. It just doesn't feel or sound right. I don't play very often, no time. But it's nice to have my set there when I want it. From about the age of 13 to 20 (then I had a baby) I played in a classic rock band with my parents and siblings. I really miss that. My parents are working on their own recording studio, so if that ever gets finished maybe will get back to playing a little bit. Sorry, way more info than you asked for.

The nice thing about drums is you can practice without sitting down at a kit, at least. My instructor rents out studio space, which is good for practice once a week.

You have to get one of those tiny sets for your baby--I have seen toddlers play around on them!

As the original guitarist from the distinguished 80's glam-metal band, "FASTER PUSSYCAT", I can personally attest to the many perks of living "life in the fast lane". We opened up for acts such as Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, and Cinderella and would often acquire considerable chickage. Life on the road provided great inspiration for my songwriting and composition.
Twenty years later, We're still runnin strong!!!....heck, we just finished up a world tour with Motorhead!!!
Here's some lyrics I just came up with the other day.....tell me what you think:

"We're running with the shadows of the night, so baby take my hand, we'll be alright, surrender all your dreams to me tonight, it'll come through in the end...."

    Pretty solid, right?

Okay, enough lurking.... need to speak about this topic!
I'm quitting "rock stardom" to go back to school to be a doctor. I gotta say, it's fun have thousands of people screaming and hounding you, etc. but it gets old really quick! On tour, you're stuck with the same few people day in and out and can't have anything meaningful with anyone else b/c they have a preset image of you and revere you so you can't be a "real" person to them. Even at the level I'm at (can't use my real name b/c I'm sure someone on the board will recognize the name and my bandmates don't know about my plans yet) which is pretty decent (lots of articles/tv appearances/etc.) the life is hard, too little money, too much time away from home, absolutely NO control over your life, having to look god all the time (what would happe to me when I'm 40? no more work in my field!) plus being hounded when people recognize you which has happened to me on a few occasions). Trust you me, privacy and control and money are a good thing! It's so not what it's cut out to be.
But being a person who need a vocation that consumes them, and someone who's had alot of hospital experience, I've now decided to go back to school and fufill my premed requirements (I already have a bachelor's) and do something I truly love (music wasn't my choice so much as other's, not that it won't always be a huge part of my life and not that i don't love it a ton).
Just felt I had to insert a little reality!
sorry if I came off as an ass, but I've spent the last year of my life being miserable bc of this rock star thing and have thought alot about it and now that I'm a little older and wiser have realized what's really important to me.
And, yes, once it's official with my band, I'll come out of the closet and see if there are any fans amongst the ranks!
Also, this board has been a great help and is a wonderful place, and thank you everyone for that!

I'm quitting "rock stardom" to go back to school to be a doctor. I gotta say, it's fun have thousands of people screaming and hounding you, etc. but it gets old really quick! On tour, you're stuck with the same few people day in and out and can't have anything meaningful with anyone else b/c they have a preset image of you and revere you so you can't be a "real" person to them. wow that's deep kasey, i never looked at it that way. I have a creative side I guess that I need to fufill one way or another. And I'm a good singer and guitarist. I just want to try it out. If I get a good response from the people, then cool. But school will be my first priority.

In your dreams maybe. If only this WERE true. Trust me, you'd have enough cash to NOT need med school. It'll wear you down as much if not more, than counting the money you made in the 80's.;)

Why ain't this in the lounge anyway? For years it's been here, dormant? Hmmm...

Can a mod transfer it there?:D

    I'm a 6' 1'' blonde hair, blue-eyed, 6 pack-sporting-almost 2nd year med student. Spread that little tidbit and when I walk into a bar, I am a rock star.
