I was wondering if anyone else feels as irritated as I do when I hear someone watch something like Gray's Anatomy or ER and be like "Man, that is one of the reasons I want to be a doctor omg lolzzzzzzzzzzzzz"

I just annoys me, those shows make the profession seem more glamourous, which can actually be quite deceptive.

Just had to have a quick vent about that...

I'm sure the cops, lawyers, crime scene investigators, and casino operators have the same complaint. It's TV people.

However, some med schools use (have used) episodes of ER to teach medical ethics (maybe cases of what not to do??).

I know I'd be the bestest doctor because of Grey's Anatomy. You remember the episode when Dr. Stevens and Dr. Yang did that autopsy in the first season? You know, on the guy who died suddenly? Because of a genetic problem with his heart? And the family didn't authorize it? But they did later?

Well, I knew it was wrong. Even before they were caught.

I'm going to be the bestest.

I knew I was going to be a doctor before Grey's Anatomy came out. But now that it is out, I say reap the benefits of people thinking doctors are sexy. So what if it's not real. Why would anyone be entertained by what residents actually do? It's television, not residency preparation.

There is no reason to get irritated....it's just a TV show. Nothing less, nothing more.

Oh, it isn't accurate??
Who cares?, if I wanted to watch reality/accuracy I would turn on the news or discovery channel, or better yet, I would go stand in the waiting room of the local hospital (now, THAT is real and live entertainment.

Oh, you don't like it and think it's stupid???
As simple as not watching it.

As far as people who want to be doctors for that show...they'll be disappointed when they try taking the pre-reqs and studying for the MCAT. Why do you think 80% (approx in my school) of pre-meds eventually drop the program? Because they realize it's not that easy, most give up along the way. So don't worry about them, life and the curriculum will weed them out eventually, and so will adcoms.

I want to have sex in storage closets like they do in GA. That's why I want to be a doctor.

Am I the only one that HATES House's voice? Oh my goodness...my brother and I just laugh everytime we hear it.

actually, IMO, the best Dr show of all is HOUSE.

Scrubs IS the best show! Also, House MD is a rip-off of an old book called "The Medical Detectives"; more than 80% of the show is taken from that book alone......lame

When the supply closet's rockin, don't come a knockin.

But House isn't alone in ripping off books. Grey's has "borrowed" plenty of material as well from memoirs like "When the Air Hits the Brain" and "Hot Lights/Cold Steel". Though I certainly don't mind having that material reread to me in a smoky voice-over from Meredith  .

Another one in agreement.

Yeah! Finally some love for Scrubs. All this hype for GA, which has only been on what, two seasons? Scrubs has stood the test of time even if it's not sensationalist. I must admit I resisted GA as long as I could but got hooked because it's actually entertaining and it has hot people. However, that's all it is - entertaining. GA doesn't even begin to touch the genius Scrubs has while being damn entertaining to boot (without racy romances every three seconds I might add). Hooray for Scrubs, I can't wait till next season!! :D Besides, if anything Scrubs has shown me there's room for humor in medicine, if you keep it on the inside mostly.

"That is an awesome ending!"
"Thanks for telling me what I already know."

Yes, Scrubs is best. There's a fair amount of good lessons in it too.

EMTs say the same except "supply closet" replaced with "truck"...which can actually rock, I've seen it before.

Imagine the not-so-beautiful-hollywood blank stares on their faces when they got a look at the MCAT! :D

I haven't read those books so I dunno how House is a ripoff. But its more of Hugh Laurie being a total jackass that makes me watch the show... you can't learn how to be that much of a jerk from a book.

Grey's sucks. The first season was really good. And the second season was great up till after the Code Black eps. Then things got really stupid. I really hoped that the shooter in the season finale had shot Meredith.

Why not...we are posting on forums...which is more similar to a book than a show. You can really craft some jerk replies over the internet on a forum. You have to think quickly when talking to someone.

Yeah, I stopped watching immediately after the Code Black thing too. I wasn't really even seriously watching for a while leading up to that too.

Yeah but its also tone of voice, facial expression, body language - it exudes a sort of aura about a person. I don't think just any actor or person could do it, and he must obviously be able to work with the actors around him which is also important for timing and delivery.

Grey's has an extremely good group dynamic I think, probably one of the better ones since Friends. But the problem is that it operates sort of on the Sex and the City group dynamic where you have a central character (Meredith or Carrie) and other characters around them that play into their own little stories and also bigger dramas. And when the central character starts to get really annoying (think Carrie in Season 5), it just brings the show down a notch. That would be Meredith, gradually declining over the second season until coming to a complete crash at its close.

The real problem with House isn't House or House's voice (as previously commented), but the fact that every episode is nearly identical. Someone comes in with strange symptoms. There's a blurb at the beginning of how one of the characters gets it to House's attention. Then they brainstorm and try incorrect treatments all episode long, putting the patient on the brink of death, while House makes questionable calls and raids the patients' homes until finally Wilson or Cuddy or one of the characters (possibly one in clinic) says something that causes an epiphany for House and they cue the dramatic music and he rushes in (sometimes argues with his staff about the validity of his eureka) and saves the day. And they weave in about 5 minutes here and there of background drama, sometimes a background storyline that may last 2 or 3 episodes (like his exwife).

The good thing about that repetition is that House really can't change. So he can't turn into a babbling whiny annoying spineless fruitcake like Meredith, and the show survives until it bores everyone to the point where they might contemplate going back to reality shows or those stupid singing dancing talent shows.

Agreed.

It's the only medical show that's even worth watching.

I love Scrubs! But I think season 5 got a little out of hand. About 3 quarters of the episodes had nothing to do with the hospital or medicine. And what's up with everyone getting pregnant?

That is a really good question, but it should make the next season interesting.

But I must also show my support for Grey's, I mean if it wasn't for that show girls couldn't call me Dr. McDreamy (made my week when they said it). By the way nice avatar

Hey, sex in hospitals happens in real life more than you may think. And not just in storage closets.

So True...^^

On a completely different topic (non-doctor-related), does anyone else Prison Break is an awesome show??? My roomate and I got addicted...it might be some of the few non-crap shows on TV today.

I will still defend the show to the death blindly, but yeah Zach Braff himself said the writers went a little zany as of late.
