I'm applying in this upcoming cycle, and I'm trying to figure out which e-mail address I should use. I think I read somewhere on SDN that after you submit your AMCAS app, you all of a sudden get a whole lot of spam e-mail from medical schools asking you to apply. Is this true? If so, then I'll use a e-mail I don't mind getting spammed, but I don't want my real e-mail to get spammed all because I put it on my AMCAS app.

No they dont, I havent gotten any spam on my main email account (hotmail, because I still havent gotten a gmail invite) even though I used it for my AMCAS. Be sure to use email address you use the most because schools will use it, a lot (allmost all your secondaries, half your interviews, and even some acceptance letters.) Also check your automatic junk mail folder constantly as for some reason some schools letters get shuttled there.

So its not like when we took the SAT and then we started getting hundreds of spam from colleges?

Also, if you PM me with your e-mail address, I can give you a gmail invite, i think I have like 99 left.

I got some spam after AMCAS but not an unmanageable amount. Maybe 10-20 emails total. Mostly from the military.

I did not receive any spam from AMCAS. It seems like ages ago when I created my account, but you also might want to look to see if there is an 'opt out' option. You definitely want to use a very stable account. If you're not neurotic about checking email now... you will be 🙂

I'll second that...I never got any spam whatsoever with AMCAS. I used my school e-mail address, which I guard with my life (to make sure it stays spam free), and it's been almost a year since I registered with AMCAS and i haven't received one piece of spam from them. The only thing I got - and I don't know if this was because of AMCAS or my school - was e-mail about military health profressions programs, which while annoying, is legitimate information and I'm sure they have agreements with AMCAS. But it's really been maybe 10 e-mails total over the course of the year. So I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I have LOTS of gmail invites left. If you want one, PM me.

EDIT: oops, I just noticed you already got an offer from doctajay

I would suggest opening a separate account JUST for the med school process. That way you can be SURE that nothing important gets lost in the SPAM folder - plus it is exciting every time you open your mail and it says "Inbox 1" you know it is something med school related.

The amount of spam is minimal - I think I got maybe a total of 5 pieces (military, Tulane, Ros Franklin, Ross U.)

I 😍 Gmail!

Forgot to add that Gmail's filtering is really good. I havent missed an important email yet, and I dont plan on it either!
