hey guys

I was wondering what everyone thinks about teaching and practicing dentistry. I am really interested in teaching in school, but I would like to run my own practice. Is that possible?

I have heard so much about the shortage of teachers in dental school, is that true.

what does a dental school professor make in dental school, roughly

I have had 3 years of teaching in a workshop program at my university. They pay your tution to tutor/teach at risk classes with high failure rates. I really enjoy passing on the wealth of knowledge. Then seeing students succeed in the classroom is really awesome.

any schools that i should look at in particular that stress the academics. I live in texas,

Yes, Hockeydentist

Many dentists that have private practices teach and work independently. Dr. Jeff is a general dentist who teaches at UCONN. I plan on teaching as well at least 25% of the time.

However, salaries are very low for profs. That's why there are over 400 spots open currently in this nations dental schools.

you make bank with your own practice. so people get greedy. So as of right now I plan to teach, but I may get greedy as well. 🙂

Also, PENN has a combined DMD/MS.Ed program which you can complete in four years. That gives you an heads up in the academic world.

I'd like to teach High School Chemestry when I retire from dentistry. At least that is what I am thinking of doing at the moment.

what up hockeydentist,

this is something that I am interested in as well. As DesiDentist mentioned, there are a large number of spots available to teach, and if you add that there are many dental professors who will be retiring in a few years, the number goes up even higher.

As far as salaries are concerned, I hear that it is competitive to being an associate (however, those numbers seem to vary quite a bit, esp. given the recent thread about salaries) AFTER you factor in the benefits. The NICDR also has a scholarship program for dentists in academia to pay up to 35k of their school loans - this was something that I didn't know until my interviewer (a heavy researcher) mentioned it to me.

Also, with clinical faculty, the schools usually want you to have a few years of exp. out of school before coming back to drop some clinic knowledge on those DSI-DSIVs...
