Or do schools only send out secondaries if you have passed their primary application cut?
also, why am i receiving secondaries already when my amcas status is 'pending review'?

Most schools send secondaries to every applicant these days. However, there are some schools that still screen (UCSF, Mayo, and maybe Vanderbilt I know off hand). Check your MSAR or search these pages for threads about screeners.

AMCAS sends your preliminary data to all the schools you designated--so the non screeners just send you a secondary email, why make you wait 😉

Some schools send you a secondary the moment you submit AMCAS, indicating you're interested. (columbia, BU etc)

Others wait until your AMCAS is verified before sending anything. (most schools)

Then there are those that screen before sending secondaries. some of those school offer an interview along with te secondary (i think) which is why it takes so long. vandy, mayo
