Does helping a family member count as volunteering?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would say it does count, but that is just my opinion. It might be bad taste to say that you are volunteering for a family member though.

I feel like this might be a dumb question, but I'm curious to hear peoples' responses. My grandma lived nearby in a duplex with another elderly woman and I spent a ton of time helping them out with yard work, cleaning, etc. A lot of times I wasn't paid, sometimes I was. Before I was serious about medical school, I spent a lot of time helping these women. Unfortunately, both are gone now, but I am curious if it counts as volunteering? Or would it have a better place somewhere else in my application?
Behaviors associated with being a loving son or grandson are not extracurricular activities.
This reminds me of the applicant who listed breast-feeding! As the Mother, not the child...
