I just had a quick question regarding my major.

This is what I am thinking of doing:

I would like to finish all my pre requisites for medical school, and if the science GPA seems good enough, then I will go into Korean major.

I was curious about this path, because I am Korean, and if I become a Korean major, would the medical school admission officers look down on it?

Another question is, does psychology class go under science GPA?

I am also thinking of becoming Psycho-biology major, which is like combination of Biology and psychology.

I saw a post on SDN about reporting psychology classes as biology classes to AMCAS, and that they accepted it has biology class.

What is AMCAS, and what does it mean to be AMCAS approved, or AMCAS accepted?

Thanks, please leave me good feedback.

Have a nice day.

Your major does not matter at all.

Just make sure you have all the pre-req classes complete for the school you will apply to.

i don't think it would look bad, but do you already know korean, why would you major in that? AMCAS determines what is counted in the GPA or not

Probably because there's a lot more to Korean than just being able to read and write? Just how English courses eventually go beyond how to read and write and move on to English literature, eventually most foreign language majors move on to examining the literature and cinema of that culture and language. The OP probably wants to study these aspects of his culture.

1) Med schools won't look down on you for majoring in this; it would be dumb for a med school to look down on you learning more about your culture.

2) Psychology classes will not count as science GPA (most likely). In general, sGPA=BCPM (biology, chemistry, physics and math), with a smattering of Engineering and Psych classes counting as well (but very few). There are strict and explicit instructions that detail what kinds of classes would be considered science for purposes of AMCAS; you can look them up yourself, as I certainly can't tell you how your specific classes would apply.

3) What is AMCAS? Really? Does Google not exist or work where you're from?

Sorry that No. 3 came out really sarcastic and rude... but seriously, you could find this out in 2 seconds if you tried even a little. It gets annoying to see people post questions on SDN when 90% of the questions could be solved by themselves via a quick search either of these boards or on Google.

i'm really bad at expressing my ideas cos i'm lady and don't want to type it all out. but yeah, i mean if you're interested in it. just major what you are interested in

I seriously did have a stalker last year. She called up my mom and started asking where I lived and told her that she would just wait outside my apartment if I did not answer her phone calls. Sometimes she would wait outside of class for me. (I had no idea who she was at first) It was creepy...and sad...and kinda hot...but it got old and she was gross.

edit: congratz on posting for the 1000th time.

omg, you caught me.

but really, that's really scary. how did she get your mom's number ... :wow:

You'll never know what AMCAS will count as BCPM until you get your application verified. I had research for credit counted as BCPM, while physiology wasn't. Both were through the BME department.

Could care less what you think.

We are listed in the phonebook...I guess I took a course with her over the summer and she learned my name from that class. It was not that scary because she was a girl and I am pretty sure she just had a crush on me, but she would just wait for me outside random classes (I dont know how she knew my schedule)... It stopped though once I got a GF.

If you have to ask, it probably does not count BCPM.

Major has no impact whatsoever, but you WILL be asked about why you chose it. Prepare to have a great explanation about how it will help you as a doctor.

Like everyone else in the thread has said, major in whatever you like.

Is "because I like Math" not a good enough reason? I mean, I chose not to do Biology because I find plants and all that other non-human stuff boring. Why does my major choice have to help me be a doctor? Do I need some answer about how majoring in math improved my logical thinking and problem-solving skills?

While both will suffice, the second one sounds a lot better/gives it more spin. Ultimately your choice (and it probably wont matter a whole lot).

Someone's sarcasm detector is clearly not functioning.

"I like math" is a fine premise to START from, but you should be ready to explain why if you like math so much you aren't pursuing a career in it.

People from the US speak English and no one looks down on them for being English majors.

What? I was never asked that once, and frankly I think its a stupid question. *GASP* A person might have an interest outside of science? And they wanted to learn about the subject during college because they knew they'd never have the chance to learna about it again? *DOUBLE GASP* Your major doesnt need to help you as a doctor. Lets be real, how many majors are actually going to help while we are doctors? Wtf is a bio major going to help you with? Sure you might know some of the material while in medical school and not have to study as hard for some classes, but as far as practicing as a physician its not going to do anything. You can say the same for chemistry, physics, kinesiology, spanish, math etc.

It doesnt. Just major in whatever you have a passion for it. Its OKAY to have a passion for math while pursuing a career in medicine. No one is going to criticize you for it. Andyou dont need to make up some BS excuse trying to connect math to your future skills as a physician. If i had somoene tell me that I would just kinda roll my eyes and chuckle.

i dont think it matters, as long as it is a major offered at most universities... and there are a lot of same majors offered throughout the country!

but if it is like underwater basket weaving and your university is the only university in the country that offers that major, then I would advice you against it despite all what adcom's say about major not mattering

so look around other universities and see if they offer the major u are interested in.. if they do, it means it is regarded as a standard major, and u're fine then

In general, majors don't matter and minors don't matter.

However, if you have an otherwise blah gpa but you have a 4.0 gpa in your heritage language and you choose to major in that language, it might be seen as "padding" the gpa. The same goes for majoring in something that would be considered "just too easy" such as "recreation and leisure studies".

i typed in korean major in google and on the first page only 5 universities showed up with that major, so I am guessing it is not a "standard major" so I would advice you against it....

HOWEVER, you could major in Asian Studies Major. You type that into google, and clearly A LOT of universities offer that major (much more than Korean major), so an Asian Studies Major is something you can look into.

Thats just my friendly advice 😉
