For example, If I am a michigan resident, will that help me get into a residency program in michigan? Or does that not matter?

You'll get more interviews in the area. Programs recieve so many applications they try to interview people that they think actually want to live in the area.

All of my interviews so far have been "convince us that you'll actually come here", which was surprising. I thought I would have to be selling myself on interviews, but programs are more concerned about selling themselves.
