i've heard that Step 1 mainly covers physio, pharm and path and i should focus on those subjects when studying for it. is this right?

so i shouldn't even worry about anatomy, histo, micro, biochem, etc??

For Step 1 you will be tested on every single subject you covered in the first two years of medical school. Although physio, pharm and path are the most important, you will see LOTS of questions from the other subjects as well. Every exam is different (some will have a lot of anatomy and not a lot of micro, while for others it might be the other way around), but every subject will be represented.

What? I heard the USMLE's were only on subjects that started with a "vowel" like Anatomy, Embryology, Immunology, Oncology and Urology. 😕

Does this include subjects that start with a Y? I'm confused because sometimes Y functions as a vowel. I need to know if I should bother learning about Yersinia.

thanks for the insight superoxide. i wasn't really sure how to approach this intimidating exam... i've heard all types of stuff that were being tested on it.

as for the others w/ the smart a$$ comments, that doesn't help people like me who have no clue what's going on w/ step 1. i'm sure you were in my shoes at some point and someone gave you helpful insights on how to approach the exam instead of just laughing at you for not knowing. please keep that into consideration when people ask for questions that you think are trivial or stupid.

The highest yield material is Path, Physio, Pharm, Biochem, and Micro in no particular order. Anatomy is less emphasized, and there was essentially no Histo on mine.

according the the kaplan class i took, here is the average breakdown.

physio - 30%
path - 30%
pharm - 25%
micro - 5-10%
the rest - 5-10%

Did you honestly think that you could pass USMLE step 1 without "worrying" about those subjects, as you stated in your original post? It's just common sense that yes they will be testing you on EVERYTHING. So you need to study each subject as if they had equal importance My friend had a test that was mostly anatomy and behavioral/ethics with minimal path or phys. So what happens if you get a test like that if you follow that sweet study strategy that you "heard about?" In the words of Edward Goljan M.D. "You're screwed!!"

be prepared to answer questions that connect multiple subjects...do a search on heavily tested subjects. I think the list includes path, pathophys, phys, pharm, biochem, molecular bio, etc etc...
