I would like to say that while I have a committee which writes a letter and submits it to medical schools, there was exactly no advising on our campus. The advice they gave me when I was a freshman, "Here is a list of classes to take. Take thos and you'll be fine." I did all the leg work. Bastards.
I have to say that VCU has a GREAT pre-med advisor. I know a lot of people wouldn't agree with me, but that is because most object to how he advises you. He doesn't mince words. He tells you quite bluntly how things are. Before registration every semester he sits down with you and your transcript and makes sure you are taking the right classes.
I have really gotten to know him over these past 4 years, especially cause I work closely with him due to the fact that I am a pre-med society officer. He is retiring next year and I worry about VCU finding someone who cares about us as much as he does. I wish you all could have a pre-med advisor as greta as the one I have had.
my first school had a horrible pre med advisor! she told a very good friend of mine in his interview that he wouldn't make a good doctor and would put that on her recommendation letter. He applied without telling her where he was applying and got in. She was also my freshman year advisor and told me after my 1st semester at school that I should transfer out from the school to a community college more my level. That it was a mistake that I was ever accepted. I got my degree.
My current college for post bacc has an amazing pre-med advisor. This guy is amazing, kinda wish I started off at my current school. They seem to encourage students more instead of discouraging students for the sake of raising their statistics.
