Doing an IM residency and then applying to a EM residency...

I wanted to go into EM residency but I did not apply this year through the match. I only applied to preliminary medicine programs and was offered a primary care internal medicine categorical spot. I am thinking of accepting it and then applying to an EM residency afterward. I have a three year gap after my medical school, so applying to EM this year would have been difficult.

I would appreciate any advice.
