Doing residency in America

Hi,
I am a second year student @ UofT dent. I was wondering if someone can give me some info on "doing a residency in the US". I wanted to know about how much is the salary, can you do residency in specific fields (i.e., perio), how many positions are available for foreigners (Canadians) each year, which states are easier (have more positions and less restrictions for Canadians), etc.. Thanks

Hello - Im not sure about perio but i know that most every ortho program lost their stipends last year and what were left were cut back very bad - there was a big reduction in graduate medical education funding... So don't count on being paid much if at all. (again, perio could be ok still w/$ I'm not sure) - but as far as being Canadian, you shouldnt have a big problem finding a program if your numbers are good. Since Canadians dont take our national boards, I imagine that your class rank/grades are pretty important. There usually aren't quotas for international residents as far as I can tell. You really should invest in this book available at ASDAnet.com - ASDA's guide to postdoctoral dental education. it lists particulars for each program. The only concern I think you should have is whether or not a particular program requires a US license during your residency. other than that, the coast is clear. I really suggest you take a look at the University of Texas HSC San Antonio's perio program - I've heard good things, and our school has a lot of Canadian residents in different programs.
