I have a question regarding how succesful DO's are at securing fellowships. I would like to be a neonatologist or pediatric intensivist but have never seen a DO function in that capacity. So I have only applied to MD schools. However, I work at a hospital that has both MD and DO residents (fam. prac.) and I don't have a bias towards either one and in fact it seems that the DO's tend to be a little sharper. What is the scoop, can DO's get into pediatric intensivist or neonatal fellowships?

First you will need to complete a residency in pediatrics and then apply for a fellowship in these fields. Many DO grads are in pediatrics programs including tertiary allopathic hospitals.Your ability to get the fellowship you want has more to do with your performance during your residency than DO or MD.

We had an Osteopathic pediatric critical care specialist teach at WVSOM, so they are out there, though I admit rare.

The D.O. that I shadowed is a high risk neonatologist. he graduated from UHS. He likes his work so I think being a D.O. doesn't limit you with your options. So don't give up simply because of being D.O. You're still be a physician and securing a residency or position is not impossible at all from talking to him.

I made a reply to you in the pre-DO section. But, I'll repeat my offer here...I have done research into DOs who are PedsCardiologists and PI intensivists. I have some contact info you may find useful. Please e-mail me off of SDN and I will send to you what I have.
