Hey.
I will be attending MSUCOM this upcoming fall and had a quick question about residency opportunities. Does anyone know how competitive it is to find a residency spot(no particular field) in a city like Denver? Also, since there are no osteopathic schools around or in CO, does anyone also know if there would be any specific DO residency spots available?

I can't say much about spots but the DO I shadowed told me that they are working on trying to get DO school in CO....again...the MD program cornered ther market and pushed out their original intentions, but they are going at it again because DO's are becoming a higher demand in the Denver area. I am hoping that by the time it comes for my residencies there is some solid options in Denver. I love it here and hope to return soon.

My mentor DO did her residency at St. Joseph's, and joined up with Wheatridge Internal Medicine Associates. It can be done. Also, she had some medical students doing their rotations with her while I was working at Lutheran Medical Center in Wheatridge. I hope to get a residency in Colorado also, as that is where my parents live.

While working at University of Colorado Hospital I met a DO resident in family practice and general surgery, and one of their ED dept heads is a DO. Also met a pathology resident at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs.

USMLE is a must for most fields in CO, even then for some specialties it is still a hard sell for residency. Though I think for FP all you need is COMLEX scores.

I was considering a move to Co after school. Is that just due to the reputation of most residency positions in Co? Or have you talked to most of the program directors in most of the fields in Co?

No need to get snippy. Just stating my experience and those of other DO students doing rotations in Co. I have talked to a few, ie IM, Ob/Gyn, Gen Surg, & FP. So, out of those, the only field I know that will only take COMLEX is FP, all others want USMLE. Plain and simple. Oh, and did you know that CU will charge a DO student $1,000 (for in state residents) and $2,000 for out state residents to do a rotation there. I am not saying that there are not DOs getting positions, just have to jump through a few more hoops.

I worked in research at U of Colo HSC for a few years in the department of anesthesiology. Every year I was there, there were a few DO residents in the graduating class. This year there is a resident from AZCOM, so at least the department of Anesthesiology is DO friendly.
